Known also by the acronym QOTSA, Queens of the Stone Age are one of the most acclaimed and popular hard rock bands of the 21st century. They formed in the mid-90s around guitarist and singer Josh Homme, once of cult stoner-rock band Kyuss. Homme is the sole remaining founder member.
Their debut self-titled album (1998) and Rated R (2000) brought them warm reviews, and their growing fan-base was swelled by energetic live shows across Europe and America. Rated R was widely thought to be one of the best rock albums of the year.
For their third album, Songs for the Deaf (2002), QOTSA were joined by former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl, now frontman of the Foo Fighters. The album was their biggest success yet, featuring minor hit singles in "No One Knows" and "Go with the Flow", winning rave reviews and gaining plenty of airplay. It has now sold over a million copies.
In 2004, Homme fired well-known bassist Nick Oliveri from the group, citing Oliveri's wild lifestyle as interfering with the band's work. With a new bassist, and former Danzig drummer Joey Castillo taking over from Grohl on drums, the new QOTSA released Lullabies to Paralyze in 2005, and Era Vulgaris followed in 2007. Both albums were well received by most critics and fans, although most agreed that Songs For The Deaf was still their best release.
