Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Released just in time to usher in the final season of Showtime's gritty, gay-themed series, this accompanying fifth soundtrack anthology expands upon a smart pop music sensibility whose popularity parallels the show itself. The 20 beat-savvy tracks here were inspired by the nightspot that's an integral part of the series' drama, a vibrant double-disc collection that interweaves such 80's-vintage club staples as Bronski Beat's "Smalltown Boy," and The Pet Shop Boys' (with an assist from Peter Rauhofer) "Break 4 Love" with more contemporary grooves like Ultra Nate's "Free" and "Safe From Harm" by Narcotic Thrust. Fans will note that a number of the versions here differ from those actually aired on the show. But as mixed by Chris Cox (disc one) and Abel Aguilera (the edgier, more expansive disc two) and seamlessly sequenced sans track gaps, the intent is not to offer up a slavish show song-score, but rather to synthesize a fictional night at Club Babylon that stretches from the first disc's upbeat pop to the sensual, hypnotic rhythms of Suzanne Palmer and Rachel Panay that highlight the closer. --Jerry McCulley

5.0 out of 5 stars DJ Set but also a true soundtrack, May 12, 2005

I'm not sure why some people are complaining, but I recognized every song on both CDs as being used to some degree on QUEER AS FOLK (especially the Kristine W tracks and "Spin Spin Sugar"). Now these mixes are different from what you may have heard in the show, and yes songs are mixed as a continuous DJ set with no breaks between songs - just like a club, and hence the title CLUB BABYLON. It's what I expected, and reminds me of the second season's soundtrack format. All that being said, it's a good collection of strong dance songs from all the seasons. The mixes are solid, they all flow nicely, and there are no instrumental tracks... so it's very dramatic and oriented around vocals. Definitely worth it if you're a fan of club music.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hot collection for fans of dance mix compilations, May 6, 2005
This review is from: Queer As Folk: Club Babylon / TV O.S.T (Audio CD)
I don't think it's worth concerning one's self with whether or not these songs are used on the show. This is a great dance compilation for fans of Circuit Party, Masterbeat, Global Groove and Party Groove series. Personally I find disc 2, mixed by Abel, to be the stronger of the two. On disc 1, Chris Cox not only goes for obvious and overplayed tracks, but use of new wave classics does not really work. Particularly since he starts with Book of Love then moves into the recent Oscar G remix of Ultra Nate, then jumps BACK to new wave with Bronski Beat. Realistically, he should have begun with bronski beat and its awesome slow intro, then segued from there into Book of Love, and from THAT point, bring us up to the modern day stuff. But he did end with a bang, using one of the better remixes of his buddy Barry Harris's "Dive in the Pool," a Queer As Folk classic. Disc 2, on the other hand, is all pumping club music of right now. Only other issue is that both discs run under a full hour. They should have allowed longer lengths for each song and filled up a whole CD (Abel gives us lengthier versions on disc 2, but they still aren't full length tracks). Track times are:

CD1

1. boy (3:16)
2. free (4:48)
3. smalltown boy (4:55)
4. true (4:41)
5. spin spin sugar (6:10)
6. fly again (6:37)
7. appreciate me (4:54)
8. safe from harm (5:27)
9. break 4 love (6:33)
10. Dive in the pool (5:43)

CD2
1. home (7:18)
2. wonder of it all (6:55)
3. I need you (5:55)
4. doesn't really matter (6:37)
5. give me your love (6:35)
6. stand up (5:05)
7. lift it up (6:01)
8. b more shake (2:41)
9. back to love (5:23)
10. so many times (5:02)

4.0 out of 5 stars You won't be disappointed if you know what you are getting., May 1, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Queer As Folk: Club Babylon / TV O.S.T (Audio CD)
This cd is perfect for anyone who is really into Babylon and the type of music and mixes that seem to be played at Babylon! However, if you are looking for another Queer As Folk soundtrack, to avoid disappointment, make sure you are aware that this is not really a TV Soundtrack for Queer As Folk. This cd goes along well with the actual Babylon club tour that is going on in several locations throughout the US now. The cd is not affiliated with any specific season.

The FIRST DISC is a compilation of club mixes of songs used from various seasons of Queer As folk. They are not the exact mixes used in the show. This disc (as well as the second one) are continuous music mixes, with no track stopping at the ends, all songs mix into each other (similar to the first disc of the Queer As Folk season 3 soundtrack).

The SECOND DISC is a repeat of the style of the first disc, but does not contain songs from the show, rather is along the lines of songs that COULD BE or WOULD HAVE BEEN heard at Babylon. I wouldn't be surprised if some of these songs were/are used on the Babylon tour, however, I cannot say if they are/were.

So, if you are true fan of this show, and enjoy anything really associated with it, than I say you will like this cd and will appreciate it for what it is, a cd of dance club songs. However, if your favorite types of songs used on Queer As Folk have more of a tendency to be from scenes outside of Babylon, you may want to think twice before you purchase.
