Who's Who? It's Joao Donato, That's Who!,
By Greg C. (NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Quem E Quem (Audio CD)
THIS IS IT!! "Quem E Quem" is what can be described as an "underground" classic, whose reputation has been growing exponentially since its original release in 1973. Pianist-composer Donato, back in Brazil after a decade-plus period living in America, is heard here delving into the sonic and tonal possibilities of the Rhodes electric piano with a vengeance, with none other than the great Marcos Valle at the production controls. This album is above all extremely catchy and appealing, even though JD's long list of talents doesn't include singing, which doesn't prevent him giving it a shot for the first time here. His raspy warble actually has a certain laissez-faire charm to it, and the album is also dotted by several brilliant instrumentals to balance things out. DJs who don't already know about this album are strongly advised to invest in it for both playing and sampling purposes. It's an irresistible 70s funky MPB groove classic, also perfect for laid-back listening. Get it while you can!

First brazilian recording of Joćo Donato since the early 60's...,

...and it's absolute genius at work! Donato plays electric piano here and frequently takes lead vocals, with an absoltely impressive ensemble (which unfortunaly is not identified in the brazilian release, which I own).
The highlights here are "Amazonas", which would be recorded later by Nara Lećo in the LP "Meus Amigos Sćo Um Barato"; "A Rć", which later would receive lyrics by Caetano Veloso; "Até Quem Sabe", which Gal Costa would also record later; and last but not least, the special guest singer Nana Caymmi, singing "Mentiras". Everything with great arrangements by Gaya, Laercio de Freitas, Dori Caymmi and Donato himself! Principally thanks to Joyce, Joćo Donato has been rediscovered in Brazil lately. Anyone that wants to listen to an younger Donato will be extremely satisfied with this release. Grab it now! |
