5.0 out of 5 stars Just What We Need!
This book is truly a breath of fresh air. LGBT Christians will find healing, hope and strength in the pages of this devotional. It's like a spiritual support group in book format. 5.0 out of 5 stars Just What We Need!, February 8, 2010
This review is from: Quench! refreshing devotionals by gay, trans, and affirming Christians (Paperback)
This book is truly a breath of fresh air. LGBT Christians will find healing, hope and strength in the pages of this devotional. It's like a spiritual support group in book format. We all need to get resfreshed from time to time and I found that reading this book each day helps me grow closer to God. It's perfect for Bible study. Each devotion has a scripture study and prayer. I would recommend it to anyone who is starting their journey with God or has been walking for years. It's great for everyone. I thank God for everyone who contributed to the book and for sharing their years of spiritual widsom and life experiences. Good stuff!

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspirational book!, November 23, 2010

This review is from: Quench! refreshing devotionals by gay, trans, and affirming Christians (Paperback)
I guess I am what this book calls an "affirming" Christian. The publisher is clearly aiming for a cross-section of gay, lesbian, and transgendered folks -- along with those of us who believe they deserve God's love as much as anyone. These inspirational devotionals offer real-life views from everyday Christians, with important messages that encourage soul-enriching introspection during those all-too-rare moments of quiet time. Give these authors a chance! God's love jumps out of every page of this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Challenging, Insprational Reflections!, October 20, 2010
This review is from: Quench! refreshing devotionals by gay, trans, and affirming Christians (Paperback)
Though I am a straight male, I found this book to offer keen insights into the challenges we all face in walking our paths in search of God. There is so much comfort and joy in these short essays, all of them rooted in a Scripture passage and most of them written by average folks rather than church leaders, that I would challenge anyone not to feel God's inspiration in these reflective devotionals. Sure, most of the authors are in the LGBT community, but their discussions illustrate so powerfully that faith as well as struggles with one's faith are universal features of the human spirit that I was moved. In the end, our similarities -- as usual -- are more striking than our differences.

Buy this book. It will make you think, it will lead you to prayer. God's love is in these pages. Open yourself up to it.

3.0 out of 5 stars A big step, on the right track, October 3, 2010
This review is from: Quench! refreshing devotionals by gay, trans, and affirming Christians (Paperback)
I had a hard time deciding exactly how many stars to give "Quench! refreshing devotionals by gay, trans, and affirming Christians".

To give a little detail, "Quench!" is a multi-author devotional book that is divided up into individually numbered devotionals (the reader can decide whether to do one per day or more). The format of each is a verse or passage from the Bible, commentary from the author, and then a thought for the day.

I have read up to number 23 so I cannot give a definitive answer as to whether I like the book as a whole. However, for what I've read, I give it three stars for the following reasons:

a) It is definitely a step in the right direction. "Quench!" does not focus solely on LGBTQ issues, which contributes to its refreshing quality--LGBTQ people are full people, not just defined by their sexuality or gender. In short, "Quench!" treats LGBTQ people and their allies as whole people.

b) The multi-author format can be a little disparate--which has its pros and cons. One positive aspect of having multiple authors is having multiple points of view. However, one negative is the quality control (in terms of the unity of the book) is lacking. I do not know anything about the editing of the book so i cannot speak to that.

c) (which is really b.2) As a result, some commentaries seem more relevant to the Scripture passage while others seem to merely be anecdotes that may only apply to the author. Also, be prepared to read 1 verse for one devotional, and then 10 verses for another. For me, personally, the Scripture passages (as a whole) seem too short, and sometimes I feel like I lack context from the suggest reading (I sometimes read around the suggested verses to get some context).

As a whole (up to #23 =) "Quench!" a step in the right direction, on the right track. It reminds me that I am a whole person, not just my sexuality or gender. It also reminds me that Scripture (and God, through the Word) speaks to all of me--my spirit, my body, my sexuality, etc.

5.0 out of 5 stars Calm at the end of a busy day, May 26, 2011
By
This review is from: Quench! refreshing devotionals by gay, trans, and affirming Christians (Paperback)
I'm not one to get up early & pray or read before going to work & of course after work there are always a million things to do, so I wasn't sure about fitting devotional time in. I'm so happy I was given this book as a gift. I enjoy the multiple author format & the recommended scripture/author's thoughts/prayer time format. Quench has helped me to set aside 20 minutes after getting home from a hectic day in which to calm myself & connect with God. I now find myself looking forward to this peaceful time & am better equipped afterwards to go about the evenings to-do list.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not your typical devotional!, February 10, 2011
This review is from: Quench! refreshing devotionals by gay, trans, and affirming Christians (Paperback)
I have been slow in reading this devotional, but it is definitely one worth reading.
I just wish that my brothers and sisters in Christ, who think that we in the GLBT community can't possibly be Christian would read this devotional and really spend some time with God concerning this matter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Down to Earth Advice from Everyday Individuals to Advance Your Spiritual Journey, December 8, 2010
This review is from: Quench! refreshing devotionals by gay, trans, and affirming Christians (Paperback)
It's hard to put this book down but I try to read a passage daily for inspiration. Everyday individuals from all walks of life share their experience, strength and hope. Many have traveled a hard road to find inspiration and meaning in their daily lives. Labels don't define these individuals' identities but they come from all backgrounds: straight, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning and everything in between. It's like a 12 step program for the soul. A mix of scripture and words of wisdom peppered with a touch of storytelling. As a past skeptic of organized religion and the church, this book transforms your thinking and brings you to the realization we are not alone on this journey we call life. A definite must read!

4.0 out of 5 stars Spiritually Uplifting!, November 28, 2010
This review is from: Quench! refreshing devotionals by gay, trans, and affirming Christians (Paperback)
This book is encouraging and spiritually uplifting. I often use devotional type books to help me set the tone on mornings that I can not get moving on my own. "Quench" may be aimed at gay, trans, and affirming Christians but anyone can be refreshed by the messages. A variety of authors use a different scripture each day and relate something in their own personal life that reminds them of the passage. No two days are alike so there is no redundancy. I am sure they will come out with other volumes of this "Be Still and Know" series. But in the meantime, I can take time to let go in the morning and let God and somebody else start my day on the right path.

4.0 out of 5 stars 100 of 365, November 22, 2010
This review is from: Quench! refreshing devotionals by gay, trans, and affirming Christians (Paperback)
Quench makes the perfect gift for any Christian, and I have only one concern. I wish it was 365 days of refreshing devotionals instead of only 100.

5.0 out of 5 stars great devotional, November 19, 2010
This review is from: Quench! refreshing devotionals by gay, trans, and affirming Christians (Paperback)
The different devotionals touched me in a deeply spiritual way. It was great to feel connected on a spiritual level through the writers own personal experiences in the book. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to feel as if there is someone else out there thats gone through a similar experience and how God helped them. I know that it has helped me as I went through some difficult times.
