Book Description

November 29, 2007
Imagine a world without parents or any other grown-ups.

In just a few months, all of the country’s adults have been killed by the Amazonian Plague, a genetically enhanced virus. Children are the only ones to live through the bio-terrorist attack. Total chaos abounds. Looting and cruelty is commonplace among the desperate young survivors. Many form clans to protect themselves and to stay alive. Quentel is one such clan.

When a group of children takes shelter in his family’s farmhouse, Ben tells them of his vision of Quentel: a perfect society where citizens are treated equally and there is no need to fight. But the new world may not be ready for utopia.

Not only are the older boys such as Mike, Nick, and Scott battling to take leadership, but the clan sees no alternative than to fight other clans for the limited resources of land, equipment, and food. And they must be on constant alert for attacks by other gangs who seek to plunder and rule.

Struggling against raiders from its borders, mutiny, and Mother Nature, it remains to be seen whether the young farming clan can form any sense of civility in the lawless, post-apocalyptic world they inherit.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not bad for such a young writer, February 8, 2008
By
This review is from: Quentel: A Post-Apocalyptic Novel (Paperback)
This book was entertaining and had a good concept however I thought the actual execution was a little trite. At moments when something interesting and excite was about to happen suddenly a chapter would end or many details would be skipped and the action would vanish surprisingly quick.
Im a huge fan of this genre, but felt this book is definitely geared towards young readers with short attention span. I noticed the author was very young himself, which may explain some of this, but i expect great thing from this author as he grows in his skill.

1.0 out of 5 stars Great premise, poor execution, May 29, 2011
This review is from: Quentel: A Post-Apocalyptic Novel (Paperback)
I am an avid reader of all kinds of books and have been my whole life. I have only failed to complete two books in my entire life. At the age of 14 I couldn't finish Dr. Zhivago in time for a book report, so I watched the movie. Deric Budendorf's Quentel was the other unfinished novel. I only read about a quarter of the novel before I gave up. He did a terrible job of developing believable chararcters with any depth, he did a terrible job of developing the plot and he seemed to have no target audience. Sometimes his writing was so trite and juvenile it sounded like it was written for middle grade, then he would turn to more young adult themes and the worst of it was when he attempted to be flowery and poetic, sounding more like a tawdry romance novel. The premise of the story was interesting and I would ave liked to find out what happened, but I just couldn't stomach the writing. He appears to have no idea how people actually talk to one another or how they think, especially children and/or teens. I suggest Mr. Budendorf take many writing classes to go along with that interesting imagination. This book is self-published and I think the author would have been better served to be lambasted by agents and publishers for the poor quality of his work and join a writing community where fellow authors can critique his work and help him to grow and become better, than to self-publish something no agent or publisher would have touched with a ten foot pole. You have potential Mr. Budendorf, but this was a poor attempt.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well done!!, December 12, 2007
This review is from: Quentel: A Post-Apocalyptic Novel (Paperback)
I had the pleasure of meeting the author of this book at Baldwin-Wallace College and he was a very well mannered gentleman. I see he also has a great gift for writing as he does for having a warm and charming personality. I hope this book sells off the shelves and he soon writes more wonderful stories. This book would be a super stocking stuffer!

Thanks for sharing your imagination, Carmella Juarbe
