We started with a small set, as a Christmas gift for my 9 yr old.
My kids have had so much fun designing, thinking, problem solving - they don't even know they're learning!
I was elated to see this in a "maxi" set with lots & lots of track - we've upped the thinking power & my kids met the challenge!

I bought 2x of these sets for my 7 year old. While I put most of this together, it was pretty straight forward. I feel sorry for 'Scott S' below who can't follow Ikea-like instructions as anything you needed was right there. I made a "mega-track" in around 3 hours utilizing two sets.

Initial thoughts:
* Probably most appropriate for a child building this themselves at maybe 9+.
* Set goes together pretty easily. Pieces snap in and are a pliable plastic. I put together two full sets (double-stacked vert) and didn't break anything.
* Marbles are very light and I believe a plastic. I think they're garbage. I like speed and these restrict that. Quercetti uses an approx 5/8" or 16mm marble. After writing this review, I'm going to bump the size/weight a bit and order a set of 3/4" Steel Ball Bearings and see how they work.
* To build this, I suggest first making the pillars and enough track put together on the floor to connect all the posts. Get as many hands as possible to hold onto the pillars, raise the premade track to the top and then snap on the track. As your pillars are then Interconnected, Everything easily stands on it's own and the track flows together quickly.
* The best marble run you can buy imo is a wooden one by Cuboro. However, to buy enough sets to have something worthwhile to play with will cost you over $1000. This was my second choice. Check out youtube on 'Quercetti Marble Run' and you'll see some fun setups.
* My 3 year old already did a "What Would Godzilla Do" and annihilated the entire track first day. I think he fell into it while standing on a stool to put the marble at the very top start (remem I double stacked 2x sets). I wasn't in the room when it happened, but everything was destroyed. Although it started WW3, none of the pieces broke. That part at least made me happy. =)

This set is so fun for the kids and is one of the best gifts ever. When he and she were 5 and 7, I got them their first 150 piece set, then at ages 8 and 10 we added this set, which is particularly great due to the curved pieces having guardrails. Free-form designing is the best. See if you can get the track to start on top of the couch, then cross the room and turn in and out of tables, chairs, or other toys. Build pillow tunnels, big hills and spirals. Test for momentum, speed and gravity. Simple to assemble the tracks, columns and connectors. A lot of fun! Great activity to join with children and share in the design and learning experience, or to simply supervise them on an early weekend morning while you recover on the couch, wishing you were still in bed but knowing it's an impossibility. Easy to put away quickly, too.

One negative reviewer complained about the instruction book, and that there was only one design that could be built from the book. That may be right, but it misses the point: kids have fun making lots of *different* designs, testing out whether they work or not. The learning doesn't come from slavishly trying to follow the instruction manual. This has been a great set for my 8 year old, and she's done a lot of bonding with her 13 year old sister over it. I'm ordering more pieces!

I had previously purchased the mini rail set and had a lot of fun with it, so I bought this larger set to se what monster roller coasters me and my 5 year old son could make. Solidly built. A great lesson in physics and kinetic energy. We have built some giant roller coasters with huge dips and hills. Have made tracks well over a minute long for the marble to finish. We do not follow the directions on the box, but devise our own roller coaster creations. The reviewers who say the plastic marbles that ship with the set are no good are correct. Buy yourself a handful of glass marbles and you are good to go! Have fun!

absolutely awesome toy. as a former toy industry professional who worked on construction toys, i was extremely impressed by the design and engineering of the set. the pieces all are very easy to put together and remain sturdy while in place. the set took about 90 mins to put together and was challenging, but not frustratingly so. my son is 5, and although he isn't old enough to put it together himself, he has been playing with it all morning. he is already looking forward to the next configuration and wants to get another set for his birthday to make it "even bigger."

We purchased this set to connect with two older sets to create a "mega coaster " and study gravity, acceleration, force, etc... and have a little fun while doing it. Well, the instructions were enough to put us off; if you didn't have previous experience with building these very intricate and fickle monsters, you would never be able to figure it out. I guess there are no written directions because most people/kids can't successfully master anything written in complete sentences anymore, but even the very few instructions given through pictures were absolutely horrifying to try and decipher. After 4 hours of working out the puzzle that was the instruction booklet, we struggled with the base pieces (that fit very nicely in the older models that we bought several years ago), and finally got the track together. Now that it is completed, it has worked out well for our lessons but I would never recommend this to anyone with a short temper or a short attention span!
