4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Book for the Aspiring Christian
Chuck Swindoll's "Quest For Character" is an easy-to-understand, comprehensive look at what it is to be more like Christ. He focuses on specific areas that Christians (and nearly any human) struggle with, and provides informative, encouraging, wise words on what to strive for in life, as well as what not to strive for. For example, the first chapter focuses...

1.0 out of 5 stars absolutely horrible
Swindoll was in love with a "golden age" of patriarchy that never existed. Not only does he find role models in the brutal ignorance of the Old Testament, he cites a 1947 book, Family and civilization, as an influence. Are feminist movements a cause for the "downward spiral" of civilization? Really? Try to imagine your life today if you had not encountered a...

For example, the first chapter focuses on the Big Four: Power, Pleasure, Fortune, and Fame. These are things, Swindoll explains, that we should not seek, although many of us do...

Overall, Swindoll's book is great, a must-read, and worthy of being read over several times. I am surprised it is so 'unheard of' and hope that you will give it a try. I highly recommend this book!

For those that are looking for a quick, easy read that highlights the issues we all have in common- busy lives, the perils of procrastination, the need to slow down,th impact of friends, the heart aches of death - etc. This book provides a keen insight into what the Bible says and how it related to each of our lives. A great book for daily - or in my case weekend devotions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Life Changing, December 20, 2004
I read this book over 2 years ago and I think that after reading it you will not be the same. It is very easy reading and you could probably read this book in one sitting however, I chose to read it as a daily devotional. It's thought provoking and reflective with deep truths that need to be digested slowly in order to receive it fully.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Quest For Character, February 6, 2010
"The Quest For Character" by Charles Swindoll is another one of the author's earlier titles. The book's theme is to encourage the reader on a lifelong journey to develop character and integrity through the power of the Holy Spirit.

The title is around 200 pages and is divided into 2 main areas:

1. Guard Your Heart - Protecting yourself from the forces (external and internal) that if not dealt with, can destroy your life.
2. Give Your Heart - Balance caution with a determination to love others and give your life away to invest in God's kingdom.

The two parts are roughly equal in length and contain several 2-4 pages devotions on a particular topic.

Some of the devotionals have shown up in later Swindoll titles and are still a joy to read.

Read and be encouraged. Recommended.

Swindoll was in love with a "golden age" of patriarchy that never existed. Not only does he find role models in the brutal ignorance of the Old Testament, he cites a 1947 book, Family and civilization, as an influence. Are feminist movements a cause for the "downward spiral" of civilization? Really? Try to imagine your life today if you had not encountered a well-educated, dedicated female teacher, physician, mentor, business partner, police officer, or political representative. This isn't a quest for character, it's advice on how to justify browbeating and manipulating your family and others. While a little lip service is given to helping others and compassion, mostly it's about being a tough guy. Needs to reread the New Testament.
