Editorial Reviews

Review

The Duncan family are magbeologists - those who study magical beasts. It seems that in book one their father found the Ancient Relic of Alchemy, a wheel with slots for magical items and Ruth found the first object, the Dragon Stone. Now their father is missing and the children are on a quest to find the second of the Twelve Ancient relics. They are sure that when the wheel is complete all magical beasts will be safe from extinction and they will find their father. This second relic is a vial of Elfin Elixir of Life which is running low. It is hidden by amphibian elfin-folk in an underwater cave near Aruba. This adventure is an exciting page turner. There is a sufficient danger for the children to attract most readers with a touch of magic added in. The writing is age appropriate without disrupting the flow. Also illustrated by Ami Blackford, the illustrations enhance the text and are delightful. Many are to be taken as technical drawings the children did of the magical beasts they encounter. A map on the end pages is included. Expect several sequels to complete this story. Highly recommended for grades 3-6. --Tri State Young Adult Book Review Committee, January 2008

More About the Author

Born in the small town of Norwich, Connecticut, Ami spent a vast amount of her childhood exploring the woods and developing her sense of adventure through imagination. Ami realized at a young age she treasured the art of story telling. She found great inspiration in the works of Jim Henson, C.S.Lewis, J.R.Tolkien, Brian Froud and Steven Speilberg.

In 1995, Ami realized she wanted to write and illustrate children's books.

In 2006 Ami graduated with her B.F.A from The Atlanta College of Art and her first children's book published by Red Cygnet Press. Ami believes that Quest for the Dragon Stone is her first milestone in a long and exciting career.

The road to publication has been paved by hard work and patience. Ami hopes that adults will be as enchanted with her work as children and says, "Anything you can dream may be accomplished, it is only a matter of setting one's mind to it."

5.0 out of 5 stars Creative and Artistic Excellence, October 8, 2007
This review is from: Quest for the Elfin Elixir: A Duncan Family Adventure (Book 2) (Duncan Family Adventures) (Duncan Family Adventures) (Hardcover)
Not only does Ami take you on a suspenseful adventure, she ties in some important environmental issues for kids to think about. Her illustrations are fantastic and educational at the very least. The map of Aruba and the Divi Divi tree teaches children about other parts of the world. I can't wait until book 3!!!

Ami Blackford does a terrific job cultivating a suspenseful and exciting adventure--and what terrific artwork! As good if not better than Book 1, Book 2 really delves deeper into the Duncan siblings' relationship and how they truly compliment each other with each new challenge they face. And don't we all love Simone! Feisty and fun-natured, she is the kind of friend we all wish we had. Also to note is how Blackford ties environmental messages into the book, which is wonderfully educational for children and adults alike. I'm ready for Book 3. Great job on Book 2, Ami!
