A wonderful story,

This review is from: The Quest for the Fallen Star (Mass Market Paperback)
I am a Piers Anthony fan and I love to read all his book, but I am a little worry about collaborations. For the mere nature, they are different from what I am used to when reading straight Piers. But after reading Quest, I have to say that I am not dissapointing at all. It is a wonderful, warming story from newcomer James Richey. This novel is beyond my expectation. It has great characters, specially Chentelle. It has a really nice story to tell. The world and goals of this universe are outstanding. I really love the small poems and songs that James used to give feeling to the novel. As James said in his author's notes, Allan Riggs addition of the Ill-creatures is excellent. They are evil and cunning and different from the regular description of goblins and other monsters. I love the elves in this novel. Not stuffy, aloof creatures, but hearthy and down to earth, but still different from humans. So if you haven't bought it yet, don't wait, you will not be dissapointed.

Here you've got an engaging story on a distant world, one which has fought already one war to keep it from destruction, and now faces another such challenge. Good characters with good characterization. A very good read and one heck of a way to start a writing career (James Richey). Keep up the good work!

I've not read much fantasy since childhood, but this book has opened me up to a new world. I had a hard time putting "Quest" down, and traded plenty of my sleep time in for it. But, that suited me well since it was more fun than dreaming anyway! The authors do an incredible job of depicting the imaginary world and inhabitants of Infinitera. I'd recommend this book to anyone who appreciates imaginative creativity at its best!

I had to get this book because I am a self-admitted Piers Anthony addict. If you're like me, don't be fooled by his name on the cover. According to the author's notes, this book was really written primarily by the al in et al. Don't get me wrong, it's a fantastic book, it's just not classic Anthony. There's a great deal to this story; it's involved without being overly complex. It's smart, but the ending is perhaps a bit strange. It does have a moral of sorts in the questions it asks. Is peace and harmony the ultimate goal? If so, what means are justified to that end? Different characters embody empathy, honor, frustration, and faith quite well, while maintaining their human nature (despite their sometimes non-human status). Look for more from these authors in the future, you shouldn't be disappointed.

- To have a story actually finish in one book.... (i.e. Jordan take notes)
- Have action with plot - Hero's with flaws - Hero's that die Are there unanswered questions? Sure...- who was the protector; nature of the falling star (although anyone could take a pretty good guess); nature of the lifetrees; etc. However, if you are not writing a critique on fantasy and just read for enjoyment, you will like it. A solid book... and it ends! ;^)

Above average fantasy novel,

This is an above average fantasy yarn but I would probably not read it again in the future.
The characters are all interesting & the plot is interesting at times. However, I got a little tired of the constant attacks of the forces of the Dark One. I thought this became a little too monotonous and was used as filler. I didn't really get what the nature of the "Fallen Star" was. Was it supposed to represent advanced technology from somewhere unknown which was the threat to this magical world? How did Father Marcus come to possess the forbidden knowledge? I thought near the end of the book that the story couldn't possibly be wrapped up with so few pages to go and there would be a sequel, but it was. It was not a satisfying ending for me which is why I only give it 3 stars. After reading the Authors' Notes at the end, it is a shame that Richey's name is not listed first since it was his brainchild to begin with. I am sure that Piers Anthony was listed first strictly for marketing reasons in order to sell the book. Frankly, it is hard to see much of Anthony's style in this book.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The characters were distinct and interesting. I was hooked by the first page and begging for more by the last. The authors detail and descriptions brought life to his world in vivd colors. I found myself in disagreement with the approach to Elves and Human relationship, but after consideration I believe it makes a statement about the way life really is. You don't always get what you want! If I could change anything about this book I would have made it longer, spending more time on the budding relationships. Great stuff!

Quest for a better author,
By
This review is from: Quest for the Fallen Star (Hardcover)
Although this book carries Piers Anthony's name, and starts out in a traditional style of his (nude female character), I found it lacking his touch. Which is acceptable after you read his thoughts about the collaboration. Unfortunately his thoughts are at the very end of the book. I dislike authors who use fancy words, like 'cubit', instaed of just saying 'foot'. There are many words used that are either made up or archaic, and it doesn't help the story at all. All in all the story is a nice twist on the fantasy theme, but it does drag on a bit. Which is why I give it 3 stars...wortrh reading once.

Fantasy lovers beware,

This review is from: The Quest for the Fallen Star (Mass Market Paperback)
This book lacks any of the grace ,originality or humor we associate with Piers Anthony. It is derivative, trite and cumbersome; even for a first novel it is very poorly done. Ten pages into the book I began to suspect it was really written by a nine year old girl and in the next chapter the beautiful elf princess, who sings harmony into the world, will become sad because her mean father won't let her have a pony. Piers Anthony is a good writer. His name should not be on a bad book.
