Amazon.com Review

Chief Crazy Horse said in 1850, "A very good vision is needed for life, and the man who has it must follow it--as the eagle seeks the deepest blue of the sky." There are times in life when we all need help seeing the "deepest blue," especially in times of crisis or major transitions. In these times of uncertainty, many of us seek the guidance of a higher power. In some Native American cultures this spiritual seeking is known as a "vision quest." Author Denise Linn draws upon her Native American roots, as well as the teachings from other cultures, to offer this practical guide on creating your own vision quest. You are taught how to construct an elaborate journey into nature or how to simply put aside an afternoon of focused solitude. Linn also helps you identify the visions, which may be overlooked by the untrained eye. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Review

"For all you goal-driven souls longing to discover life's purpose, confront fears, find spiritual power within, and heal emotional wounds, here's a unique 'travel guide' to help you create, carry out, and succeed."
--NAPRA ReView

"A practical guide . . . After reading Quest, it's clear that vision quests have had a profound and powerful influence on many who have undertaken them. . . . If you're searching for an experience that will enable you to learn more about yourself and your relationship with everything around you--Linn's arguments are compelling."

More About the Author

Denise Linn has been called "America's best-kept secret." For the last three and a half decades she has traveled to the far corners of the world speaking to standing-room only audiences of thousands. Her spiritual journey began as a teenager when she had a near-death experience after being shot by an unknown gunman. The revelations she received on the "other side" and the subsequent amazing healing of her wounds led Denise to eventually become an internationally respected healer, writer, and teacher.

A world-acclaimed expert in feng shui and space clearing, Denise has distilled the information and wisdom into her teachings that she gained from indigenous cultures around the planet-- the aborigines of Australia, the Zulu in Africa, the Maori of New Zealand (where she was given the title of tohunga), as well as from her own Native American roots.
Denise has taught seminars in 20 countries and has written 17 books, including the best-selling, "Sacred Space," and "Soul Coaching" as well as her personal memoir, "If I Can Forgive, So Can You!" Her books have been translated into 26 languages, and she has been a featured guest on Oprah, Lifetime, Discovery Channel, BBC TV, NBC and CBS. She is also the founder of the International Institute of Soul Coaching.

Denise and her husband, David, live at Summerhill Ranch in the wine country of the Central Coast of California with their two dogs, Pepper and Sadie, and with their five chickens. Their home is located on 40 acres of oak-covered hills surrounded by vineyards with the Santa Lucia Mountains in the distance. To the far west is the Big Sur coastline where cliffs drop suddenly into the crashing surf of the Pacific Ocean. And to the far south are vast sand dunes delicately carved by sea breezes. To the east is the Corizo Plain which is awash with brilliant wildflowers in the spring. At night the stars sparkle in the crisp night air of Summerhill, while owls hoots and coyotes howl in their nightly chorus.
On their land, they have a small orchard with 15 different kinds of fruit, 100 grapevines for home-made wine and grape juice, olive trees for olives, and a large organic garden. Whenever possible Denise and David use the bounty of their land to help supply food for the retreats held there. The land also offers sanctuary for many kinds of birds and animals. Summerhill Ranch is host to bobcats, coyotes, badgers, foxes-gray and red, porcupines, skunks, voles, moles, raccoons, pack rats and an occasion mountain lion, as well as over 40 different kinds of birds.

Denise and David's daughter Meadow enjoys working with her parents at the Ranch. In addition to handling Soul Coaching registrations, she is also the resident Summerhill Ranch chef and will delight your senses with colorful and flavorful dishes from around the world. Meadow writes a blog about love, life, and food. The blog is rich with her tantalizing recipes. Meadow is the co-author of Denise's latest book, The Mystic Cookbook.

This book was a well-thought out guide to planning, preparing for and going on a Vision Quest. I especially appreciated the practicality that Ms. Linn exhibited in her suggestions and exercises. She describes vision quests that range from an afternoon to several days -- all worthwhile.
Additionally, her writing is clear and concise, making it easy to read and understand.

This is my favorite book of Denise Linn. Makes you want to go on a vision quest with her. In it she describes different options for going on a vision quest: ranging from an indoor quest in your room to one in your own backyard all the way to a full blown vision quest in the wilderness. Great material to prep you mentally and physically for your quest. Very helpful and non judgemental. If you're toying with the idea of going on a vision quest or just need a way to find time and space for a mini personal retreat, this book is a great read!

What do you do when you want to go on a personal quest? Where do you start? What are the options? In quite a few religions, there is some sort of pilgrimage or quest required or encouraged, but what if you don't practice an organized faith or you just want to go somewhere quiet and figure yourself out? I was inspired to go questing not long ago, but had no money and no way of traveling to an appropriate location. This book was very helpful! It was full of spiritual ideas and accounts of some responses of people on their own vision quests. It kept inspiring me to take myself away.. now all I have to do is make some time and go!

I thought this book was excellent! It was a great introduction to Vision Quests. Anyone interested in knowing what a Vision Quest is, what steps are taken to do one, how to prepare for one, and what reactions you might have leading up to it, should read this book. It is easy to understand and written well.

Denise Linn's book is THE BEST I have ever read on Vision Quest's. I have read the review stating about Vision Quest's on a strictly Native perspective and this book gives you flexibility. Native teachings tell you on a vision quest you must fast for 3-4 days, sweat lodge for 3-4 days and without water for 3-4 days.. some people cannot fast for medical reasons and may not even be able to leave their homes.. this book gives you ways around this.
If traditions can not be modernized than we shall all die out. This book is only a few $$ and WELL WORTH IT!! The book gives you a cut and dry plan and ANYONE can follow. I too am learning from an elder.. their information does come at a price.. a willing ear and a loving heart. This book is written for EVERYONE.. and ANYONE can do it..

Anyone wondering if a vision quest is worth the time and trouble? A thousand times, yes! You may be uncomfortable, bored, anxious, etc., but that's the point: You need to be out of your comfort zone to focus on deep issues. It's not supposed to be easy, but it is life-changing. This book gave me the courage to craft my own solo quest, and the practical how-to's were great for grounding a spiritual goal into everyday reality. Buy it. Find the courage and do it. You will feel the difference in your heart and soul. Denise: A heartfelt thanks for your insight and guidance.

This is a very good instructional book on the types of vision quests, preparation, and what to do after the quest (quite important). If that is what you are after, it's a great book However, I had been researching vision quests from a strictly Native American perspective which is not the direction of the book. Although it does incorporate Native American beliefs and ideas, there is no consistant identifying of which beliefs are NA, European, etc. If I had known this, I would have not purchased the book but would have searched for a strictly Native American reference. It's a very good work, just not fully NA.
As a footnote, I've finally been blessed with 2 elders who are training me in various VisionQuest traditions of the Eastern Woodland Indians, and not charging me money for the knowledge! I am being charged, however with *freely* teaching others these things so the traditions will live on........
