Book Description

The second volume in 'The Journey of Souls Series,' 'Quest of Hope' tells the gripping story of Heinrich, the father of two sons who have joined the 'Crusade of Tears.' Against this tragic backdrop, C.D. Baker writes the intense story of Heinrich's youth, the desperate pursuit of his children, and his soul's despair--until he is rescued by Truth. Baker's passionate story-telling and reverent attention to historical detail will break your heart and mend it again. Follow Heinrich in his life's journey and you will discover the liberating power of faith.

Editorial Reviews

"Historical fiction at its best! Rich with period detail and brimming with adventure, Baker's novel brings to vibrant life the perilous story of the Children's Crusade. The courageous acts of Pieter the priest and his young band of crusaders forced me to examine my own heart. Could I withstand so much for my faith? Could I be so brave? A powerful tale, wonderfully told." Liz Curtis Higgs, bestselling author of Thorn in my Heart.
"Sometimes one can 'live' a book. I lived this one. More important than the power of this story is the power of its impact on my own thinking about redemptive suffering. If you're tired of the shallow, the banal and the boring--this is your book." Dr. Steve Brown, author, teacher.

From the Author

This was an emotionally charged book to write. A father of two sons, myself, I found the main character's quest to be very personal. I hope you will appreciate the deep valleys and high mountains that our friend, Heinrich, faces. A research trip to northern Germany added a great deal of flavor to my research that I hope you will enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoy the Journey October 28, 2012
By Scott
Format:Kindle Edition
In C.D. Baker's second novel of the Journey of Souls Series, A Quest of Hope, he takes readers for a journey alongside Heinrich of Weyer in the late 12th century Germany. Readers will follow his growth from his harsh childhood into manhood, marriage, hope and joy, and a measure of heartache. As a peasant tied to his lowly station in life, he has little means of gaining his freedom; the few opportunities he does possess never materialize in the way he would wish.
However, true to Baker's style, there are bright spots of hope that flow through the story. The personages of the Butterfly Frau (Emma) and Brother Lukas show readers that God does not necessarily reside in cold churches and harsh penance, but in creation. Moreover, readers are shown that God's grace and goodness are freely given and all around us, even while Heinrich is blinded to those truths. Despite his lack, Heinrich presses forward with tenacity, constantly searching and coming closer to the truth as the story unfolds.
An enjoyable read, full of adventure and hope with a eye to the third book of the series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Inner Struggle January 29, 2014

I so ached for this poor man and his children. l thought his story should have preceded the children's crusade. I enjoyed the blending of the two endings.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great series! April 23, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I purchased the entire series of these books and can say they were wonderful! Thought provoking and sad, they told the story of the use/abuse of these innocent children by ruthless adults in a time of tumult in one of our darker periods of history. The author did an excellent job of researching the topic using a preponderance of facts to tell this story. I don't want to give away any details, but suffice it to say that I did my fair share of crying while reading this, along with some laughter at well placed intervals. Job well done1

I enjoyed this book although it read a little slower for me than the first book. I really enjoyed how it ties into the first book.
