Book Description

August 2003 Arbeiten Zur Kirchengeschichte (Book 88)
Here, Tilton Hereward presents an intellectual biography of the Lutheran alchemist Count Michael Maier, along with an academic study of western esotericism in general and of alchemy and rosicrucianism in particular. Hereward charts the development of Maier's Hermetic worldview in the context of his service at the courts of Emperor Rudolf II and Moritz of Hessen-Kassel. The problem of the nature of early Rosicrucianism is addressed in detail, with reference to Maier's role in the promotion of this "serious jest" in the years immediately prior to the outbreak of the Thirty Years' War. The work is set in the context of ongoing debates concerning the nature of early modern alchemy and its role in the history of Western esotericism.

What a wonderful book! Recommended not only for scholars, but also for the layperson interested in alchemy and the Western esoteric tradition. The reader learns not only about the adventurous life and fascinating writings of the famous German alchemist Michael Maier, but also gets insight into the facts and myths concerning the origins of Rosicrucianism. 4.0 out of 5 stars Quest for the Phoenix, October 15, 2003
This review is from: Quest for the Phoenix: Spiritual Alchemy and Rosicrucianism in the Work of Count Michael Maier (1569-1622) (Arbeiten Zur Kirchengeschichte) (Hardcover)
Tilton offers an insightful study of Maier's development of alchemical theory and practice in 17th century Germany. The book surveys many of the influences that informed Maier during his formative years and illuminates key aspects of his work that had previously been unknown. In short, Tilton has written the definitive study and it should rank high on the reading list for anyone interested in knowing more about this extraordinary and enigmatic figure.
