5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Young Adult Adventure Novel, January 19, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Loosely based on real experiences, this novel chronicles Ken Lewis and John Benton's experiences on an expedition in Yunnan in China and the Tibetan frontier. They are on an expedition from a museum to take a collection from China, and if possible capture a living snow leopard. There is plenty of excitement from man-eating tigers, to pirates, to experiences among the natives.

The author, Roy Chapman Andrews, was a famous explorer in China. He wrote this book to give teens a view of how museum expeditions were run.

I really enjoyed this book as a teen and so bought it as an adult. Since the book was written in 1962, some of preconceptions in the book may clash with modern sensibilities (the animals are shot for the museum, racial views), but these issues are minor, and makes it an interesting snapshot of the time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exciting Asian Adventure!, November 27, 2010
Great exciting book about scientific adventures in the mountains of central Asia. Loved this book as a kid and still love it today. This book is basically for young boys, but girls can enjoy it as well. Parts of it are old fashioned and not PC, but the story line still works and the excitement is sill there. The book shares what it's like to have the excitement and adventure of being a scientist working in the real world including the danger, the adrenaline rush of discovery, and also the tedious work connected with it. Really a great yarn, and for me inspiring. This book led me into a career in science. It's a great read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Memorable, August 20, 2011
I read this book when it was new and never forgot it. I was inspired to search Amazon.com after I got my new Macintosh with its desktop photos of snow leopards. I am going to buy this book in hard cover if it's available and keep it the rest of my life. I was always inspired by adventurous books. It probably contributed to my own quest to travel. This book may have been written for boys, but some of us girls like it too.
