Book Description

July 15, 2003
Tary Dickson, a young single mother and witch is drawn into a covert world of sorcery and espionage. As the unwitting holder of a mysterious talisman, she is duped into playing a role in a high stakes game of Chaos.

Led by an enigmatic doctor from England, she finds herself tangled in a web of lies and deceit. To make matters worse, Tary is falling in love with this doctor... but can she trust him, or is he just using her for his own ends?

THE THEORY

They say that over ninety percent of our Universe is composed of ‘dark matter’, invisible mass which exerts influence over every bit of matter. It neither reflects not transmits light and so is impossible to perceive with our human senses. This dark matter acts as a net keeping the galaxies in balance. It prevents the stars and their satellites from spinning off into whatever it is that exists outside our own Universe, and counters the pull of the light matter, which we observe as the stars.

The theory is that the planets, our Earth included, are all composed of this dark matter. Particles of it are constantly rushing round, even in and through our own bodies. It is, they say, the dust of exploded stars—the result of the Big Bang. Even we are composed of bits of dark matter, proteins and protoplasm, whose molecules and particles will endure as long as the Universe itself in one form or another; star stuff.

Perhaps it is the dark side of our spirit which keeps us in balance, keeps us from spinning off into some void beyond ether. I don’t know. I understand that we need this other side of us. I also understand that when we become unbalanced, or the world we share becomes unbalanced, everything is threatened.

The other kind of matter, the kind that transmits light, is too bright for us to look upon directly. It too exerts its influence over all existing matter, balancing the dark. I think, perhaps, that it is the balance between the two, ninety percent dark and ten percent light, that maintains the order which permits life to exist. I am not a scientist. I am a witch.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Question of Balance, August 12, 2004
This review is from: A Question of Balance (Paperback)
If you enjoy nonstop action this book is for you. Once I started reading I could not put it down as I wanted to find out what was going to happen to our beloved heroine next. Ms. Reynold's writing style is easy on the brain, yet very descriptive. I could feel the emotion of the characters and visualize what they were seeing. Without giving away too much of the plot, I want to point out that this book gives easy to understand explanations of some Pagan philosophies and practices that are necessary for appreciating the story. The action, which takes place in the USA and Europe is reminicent of an older James Bond novel. I don't want to give away any more. You'll have to read the book for yourself. This is definitely one of the better books I have read. Can't wait for the next book, to see what kind of trouble Lady Tarish will get herself into.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun, sexy and gripping, October 1, 2003

This is an exciting and fast moving novel. The well developed characters are people you quickly care about. The plot twists caught me by surprise. Just when I thought I could predict what was coming, the author took off somewhere else. Editing could have been better, but I am sure future editions will be corrected. All in all a very satisfying read in the genre of urban or dark fantasy (laced liberally with romance, adventure and humour). Some graphic sex and violence advance the story and are not (in my opinion) over done.
