Review

"A most charming, sexy, independent, and candid heroine; clever, literate dialog; and closely woven plotting will win immediate fans."

About the Author

Kerry Greenwood was born in the Melbourne suburb of Footscray and after wandering far and wide, she returned to live there. She has degrees in English and Law from Melbourne University and was admitted to the legal profession on the 1st April 1982, a day which she finds both soothing and significant. Kerry has written twenty novels, a number of plays, including The Troubadours with Stephen D'Arcy, is an award-winning children's writer and has edited and contributed to several anthologies. The Phryne Fisher series (pronounced Fry-knee, to rhyme with briny) began in 1989 with Cocaine Blues which was a great success. Kerry has written sixteen books in this series with no sign yet of Miss Fisher hanging up her pearl-handled pistol. Kerry says that as long as people want to read them, she can keep writing them. 4.0 out of 5 stars Quality collection for Phryne lovers, February 14, 2011

This review is from: A Question of Death: An Illustrated Phryne Fisher Treasury (Hardcover)
"A Question of Death" is a compendium of Phryne Fisher short stories and memorabilia, including recipes, a look in Phryne's closet, and an interesting essay on the genesis of the series and the writing process from Miss Fisher's creator, Kerry Greenwood. Also included are lavish and gorgeous illustrations. Even the paper feels luxurious. This collection is a must-have for every serious Phryne aficionado.

I rated it only four stars for two reasons: one, it is quite expensive for a novel of its size; and two (and more importantly), many of these characters and situations are first attempts at materials that were later fleshed out into novels. Ms. Greenwood cheerfully acknowledges that in her introduction, but if someone buys the book without reading the introduction, they may find that disappointing. If that sort of thing offends you (even if printed on really, really nice paper), do not buy this book.

Personally, I enjoyed it, although I think both Ms. Greenwood and Miss Fisher do better in novel format. A short story isn't really long enough to do them justice.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Aussie with an attitude, June 26, 2010

This review is from: A Question of Death: An Illustrated Phryne Fisher Treasury (Hardcover)
I have yet to read a Phryne Fisher adventure that hasn't entertained and enlightened. This illustrated collection of shorts and Phryne favorites is a great way to learn about the beginnings of the delightful detective and her unique family and associates.
