Editorial Reviews

Review

“Judd (William Paterson Univ.) defends several important theses in this compact work… [H]er extensively documented, close reading of Baconian and later source texts is a model of intellectual history and a timely reminder of the value of science in an age when it has been subjected to much ignorant political criticism. Summing Up: Recommended. All undergraduate, graduate, and research collections.”

—S. E. Forschler, Choice

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful By Frederick Fludd on August 25, 2009
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
This book argues that the political freedoms we take for granted in modern democracies owe a great deal to the development of the scientific method in 16th through 18th-century Europe. Without the courage to question ecclesiastical authority on matters of nature, we may never have gained the freedom to question king and church on matters of political authority. The author traces the evolution of scientific freedom into political freedom from early scientists such as Francis Bacon to political thinkers including Hobbes and Locke. The book is a much-needed argument in favor of science and rationality in an era where truth seems to matter less and less.

Professor Judd distills each source to the essentials, so the student is able to find the "so what factor" (her term) of each work. as long as there are teachers like her, critical thinking is not dead.
