More About the Author
Virginia Stark-Vance is a practicing physician in Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas. She grew up in a close-knit community in the Texas Panhandle, and enlisted in the Air Force just out of high school. While working with cryptographic equipment systems, she took college courses at night and flying lessons on the weekends. Following a three-year tour in Germany, she returned to the U.S. to complete her degree in Zoology at the University of Oklahoma. As a third year medical student in the O.U. College of Medicine, she won a coveted Howard Hughes Medical Institute Research Scholarship. She spent a year working in the National Institutes of Health's laboratory of W. French Anderson, the leading researcher in human gene therapy. Years later, she returned to NIH as a medical staff fellow in the National Cancer Institute. Over the next three years, she worked with investigators from the NCI and the National Eye Institute, developing a new clinical trial for central nervous system and ocular lymphoma. She developed a passion for treating brain tumor patients, which culminated in her own solo practice in her home state in 2000. Dr. Stark-Vance lectures widely to professional and patient groups on brain tumor treatment. Her book, "100 Questions and Answers about Brain Tumors," published in 2004, was co-authored with her patient, M.L. Dubay. Later in 2004, Dr. Stark-Vance initiated the first clinical trial of Avastin in brain tumor patients. The second edition of her book, again co-authored by M.L., presents the results of her research and discusses other new therapies available for brain tumor patients. Dr. Stark-Vance lives in Fort Worth, Texas and has two children, Ted and Joy.

The book is organized from basic to more complicated concepts, and written in a manner that is very supportive, especially for those who are not professionals or familiar with medical terminology.
