5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent!, July 15, 2006
By
Debbie "DeeDee" (Washington, DC United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: 500 Questions and Answers on the Black Presence in the Bible (Paperback)
Every African American who reads the bible should read this book. This book is an easy read. For many years, I wanted to know the history of black presence in the Bible. Many African American churches and African American religious groups are really scared to rock the boat when it comes to the black presence in the Bible. I do understand that there are other cultures that also play a presence in the bible, I firmly believe, if many young men knew that there was a deep presence of blacks in the bible, and the churches would elaborate on this I believe that there would be many more African American male presence in the church. I believe that you still can learn God's word, but you can also include this also.

I would like to thank Dr. Johnson for a very enlightening book that gives me a more understanding of my heritage.

5.0 out of 5 stars A VERY USEFUL VOLUME SUPPLEMENTING HIS EARLIER BOOK, January 21, 2011
This review is from: 500 Questions and Answers on the Black Presence in the Bible (Paperback)
This book supplements Dr. Johnson's earlier book, Black Biblical Heritage Study.

In the Foreword to this 2000 book, Dr. Johnson writes, "This book was written so that mankind could become more aware of the African contribution to the Bible, and to abolish the old myth that Black people contributed nothing to the Scriptures. In reality, Africa had a tremendous impact on the early writings of the Bible, from stories and events themselves to those who wrote about them... This book was also assembled to polarize the Bible as one of the oldest documentaries of Black people; reflecting the scriptures' equality of representing all of God's creations, and not just a few."

Here are some other quotations from the book:

"Remember in Exodus 4:6-7 and Numbers 12:10 when God-Eloham changed the flesh of Moses and his sister from dark to white? Have you forgotten that Genesis 25:24-25 speaks of Isaac and Rebekah's twin Esau as being red, while his brother Jacob was of a normal complexion? How can you overlook Job 30:30 that says, 'My skin is black upon me,' or Jeremiah 13:23 that questions whether an Ethiopian can change his skin? ... color is exemplified throughout the Bible from Genesis to Revelation." (Pg. 43)
"Jesus' life being threatened by Herod forcing His parents to smuggle him to Egypt, is evidence of Jesus possessing Negro features. The major question to ask is, why would a white-skinned person hide in an all-black nation like Egypt?" (Pg. 44)
"In the book of Acts, Paul was mistaken as an Egyptian by a chief captain. Now, if Paul was blond with blue eyes and white skin, then why would the chief captain question him concerning his race, knowing that the Egyptians of his day were a black and brown skinned race?" (Pg. 61-62)
