Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Rabbi Cohen (1,001 Questions and Answers on Pesach, Aronson, 1996) addresses the major religious holidays involved in the Jewish New Year. He examines the history of the holiday, the ceremonies involved, including the religious readings, and various unique customs around the world. He fully explains the synagogue experience and home rituals. Most important, Cohen examines the key issues of repentance, forgiveness, and good deeds that define the Jewish New Year. Cohen's audience is the observant Jew, though a less traditional Jewish reader and even a very knowledgeable non-Jewish reader can understand much of his massive and detailed work. The question-and-answer format, allowing readers to skip and choose, works well as it prevents the book from becoming too didactic and tedious. Larger libraries should consider.?Paul M. 5.0 out of 5 stars It was my constant companion throughout the High Holydays., September 24, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: 1,001 Questions and Answers on Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur (Hardcover)
I heard the British broadcaster Michael Freedland describe this as "a God-send as I sit through the otherwise unintelligible and protracted High Holyday services." How right he is! It brought all the prayers to life: their theology, meaning and purpose, literary and poetic structure, origin, allusions, history, biography of authors, etc. It also taught me the reason for all the things we do at this High Holyday period, the origin and development of the festival, home customs (it made everything so easy and enriched our home celebrations) and festival traditions around the world.

I wish this book had been around as I was growing up. It would have converted my reluctant visits to synagogue at this period into a fascinating and enriching experience, and would have deepened my attachment to Judaism.

Still, it's not too late. Order the book, quick!
