5.0 out of 5 stars Buy this CD, if you've made it this far! You won't regret it, May 30, 2001
This review is from: Qui Seme Le Vent Re Colte (Audio CD)
Claude MC has an amazing gift. His ability to use language, sound, rythym & music to convey a message, at times one that is socially or politically charged, is exceptional. Somehow, in the midst of a song such as "l'Histoire de l'Art," which really flows, the idea that rappers have been discrimated against by certain elements of society who fail to see rap as an art form is introduced. Solaar, using humor, wit, an outstanding intellect and his sheer charisma, easily and non-confrontationally makes the point that the history of art is not complete until it includes the works of ALL artists. Bien Fait, Claude MC, Bravo!

The background tracks are for the most part smooth. A bit of a jazz & blues feel to them (perhaps its the saxophone) mixed with more elements familiar to modern hip hop and rap. This juxtaposition is transfixing.

Although I myself am a French speaker, I find that you do not need to know the language to enjoy Solaar's music. Fluency in the French language, however, does allow you to appreciate his music that much more as you can fully experience the joy of this gifted musician from Senegal's play with language. His lyrics are so full of such wit and irony!

Somehow I can't seem to take this CD out of my car stereo. I guess that its just so good that I want to listen to this CD at every chance I get (and its been over a year since I purchased it!)

I would highly recommend MC Solaar's Qui Seme le Vent Recolte le Tempo to anyone even thinking of buying it. If you've made it to this page, put it in your shopping cart. I promise that you will have no regrets.

5.0 out of 5 stars MC Solaar is an amazing artist!, October 30, 1998
This review is from: Qui Seme Le Vent Re Colte (Audio CD)
Despite some other listeners somewhat condescending views towards French rap, I implore you to please give it a chance, especially if you have any interest in the French langugage. I find French Rap to be thousands of times more beautiful then American rap. The Rap flows and the ryhmes are smooth. Even if you don't like Rap in general, try French Rap, its far better. Another thing I really enjoy about French Rap is that many of the songs, if you understand the French (which you will if you listen to them enough), are actually coherent and meaningful narratives...Mc Solaar's album grooves, and is simply addictive. His voice is unique in the field of Rap. I LOVE IT. Write me for any questions about Mc Solaar or French Rap...Some of my other favorite artists include...IAM, NTM, Massilia Sound System, MANAU, Doc Gyneco also many compilation albums....please check them out!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Real Treat: Not quite like any other rap you've ever heard, August 13, 2001

THIS DISC IS ABSOLUTELY WORTH THE PREMIUM IMPORT PRICE! It's definitely my favorite MC Solaar disc & one of my best rap CDs, period. It doesn't matter if you don't speak a word of French (I remember a little from 2 semesters in high-school), the sounds and rythm are so intricate and energetic that they more than make up for the jokes and whatever meaning you fail to pick up from the cognates, tone, and musical context.

Also, consider picking up Planet Rap, before it goes out of print. And Tour De La Question is a good 2-disc (live) sampling of many of Solaar's hits. I find his other later releases less compelling than this one.

BTW, if it helps, I should note that I find this disc somewhat reminiscent of good 80's rap.

5.0 out of 5 stars Formidable.....my single favorite rap album of all time., July 18, 2003

This review is from: Qui Seme Le Vent Re Colte (Audio CD)
This dude has the gift. His lyrics are outstanding. Anyone who's heard him knows it. I learned as much french from this guy as I did from 6 years of class. Even if you're not into French the cadence is undeniably entertaining. And his dj is awsome too. All the tracks are cool. The best on this cd include Quartier Nord, l' Historie d' Art and Bouge de la of course. Take my recomendation for what its worth, but this guy was ahead of his time. If he rapped in English, forget it, he be up there in popularity with anyone.......Anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars MC Solaar at his best..., December 20, 1998

I love it--more upbeat than Paradisiaque, with the same great smooth and flowing french lyrics. There is also alot more variety in this album, using familiar samples and beats with unique twists. Excellent...

5.0 out of 5 stars The beats come solid from the Parisian ghetto., July 21, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Qui Seme Le Vent Re Colte (Audio CD)
Interrupting the self-referencing rhyme loops that comprise American hip-hop culture, MC Solaar released his first staccato epistle with fury and tight grooves. This album comes loaded with the energy of different nations: Solaar's native Senegal and his adopted France. Listening to his delivery and the grease-heavy grooves spans the tough blocks of Brooklyn, the upper Bronx, Newark, and East Orange to the stark projects which ring old Paris. A revolution occured with this album, a contradiction of the singularity of the American street experience. The universality of the emotion communicated on these tracks belies the distinctions made between nations and subcultures. MC Solaar rhymes with incredible style and efficiency, turning French from the cliched language of romance to a spinning, rough vernacular remade in immigration and resettlement. Putting together samples and loops from an array of origins, DJ Jimi Jay provides the musical muscle to bum rush Solaar's! lyrics through the language barrier. Just on the strength of the turntabling alone this album rates highly, and when MC Solaar steps to the mic the whole party, from L.A. to J'burg to Marsellies, is tearin' the roof off.

4.0 out of 5 stars find something new each time, February 1, 2001

"jaboter" (Boston, MA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Qui Seme Le Vent Re Colte (Audio CD)
I've had this album for about a month now, having heard "qui sème le vent" and my favourite song keeps changing. Initially it was "Victime de la mode" with the bit "Dominique, écoutes bien ce funky beat" and the message of the story. Then it was Bouge de la (part 1)

and now, tonight, it's "Caroline" This song is beautiful, heartfelt, sweet, elegant, etc etc. I'm sure tomorrow it will be another song that will capture my ear. I find myself singing/thinking about the phrases from other songs consistently- there are a lot of great little bits of philosophy. "J'ai dû disparaître, pour réapparaître"

This album was obviously the most brillant in the carreer of Mc Solaar. It made him known all over Europe. The poet from the rap's planet. Some of his texts were given to analisis to students that wanted to graduate

I'm an American student who goes to French class every day first period. My teacher, as an excercise, played "Armand est mort" for us and we had to fill in the words. Well, I really liked the song and on a whim a year later decided to by the CD from Amazon. Well guess what, it was worth it. I found out the "Armand est mort," isn't nearly Solaar's best song. I listen to this song constantly and every one I've played it to, French speaking or not, has like it, except Fred U. who just couldn't get past the fact he didn't understand the words. Any way, the songs flow, unlike American rap, and sound great. Definatly worth buying.
