"Quick" is a compilation of Buju's earliest songs., July 23, 1999

This review is from: Quick (Audio CD)
Stamina Daddy and Gold Spoon put Buju on the charts in 1990-91, before he developed the Burro-Banton type voice he is famous for. And these songs are years away from the more mature subjects he tackles in Inna Heights. But just as true Beatles fans love to hear early demos of John and Paul, true Buju fans will love to hear where it all started from!

Stamina Daddy Revisited, October 26, 2007
This review is from: Quick (Audio CD)
This CD seems to be a re-packaging of Buju's hard-to-find, seminal album "Stamina Daddy" (released 16 Oct. 1992). As such, the track listing is a little off, but that's hardly important, as the original was more or less a compilation of the youthful Gargamel's then current dancehall rockers. (Buju was pre-dread at this phase of his career, despite the incongruous cover photo chosen for this version of the compilation.) I appreciate the range and diversity of Buju's later work, but in my opinion, he's at his best when he's coming hard in a dancehall stylee, and that's definitely what we have with this CD. Boomshot after boomshot! Bullet after bullet!
The songs on here are among the first Buju Banton tunes I'd ever heard, hearkening back to the days before Mr. Myrie's breakthrough into the American and International mainstream. The title track for this version of the album, "Quick", is a wicked dancehall scorcher, which practically obliterates the target of Buju's wrath, some hapless deejay who ends up "dung inna di freezah". This song was later interpolated with the legendary Tenor Saw's "Ring the Alarm" (as they both ride the infamous Stalag 17 riddim). Virtually every track on here is a banger. My personal favourites (aside from "Quick") are "Bring You Body Come" which finds Buju pining for a shapely girl who makes his "eye watah cyaan dun", the hilarious "Mampy Size", a tune about how maga slim Buju has fallen for a mampy (fat or pleasantly plump) girl, resulting in some of the local hoodrats teasing the couple with chants of, "Mampy an' Buju went to bed/mampy ease 'ar body/an' Buju drop dead!", "Gold Spoon" about a gyal who looks so good "she mus' be look good machine", and "Glamatize" which is yet another tune about how beautiful and glamourous some girls can be.
Yes, these early girl and gun tunes are a far cry from Buju's later "conscious" works, but in my opinion, they still rate among his best. Every song on here is raw, unprocessed Buju before the record company A&Rs got a hold of him and retooled his image for a hip hop infused, radio friendly crossover. Galang Gargamel!

Old Buju luvers, August 12, 1999

Now I had to go and find this cd and listen to it after the comments I read on this page. After listening to it I came to the conclusion that the album is not Bad if you are a fan of BUJU'S EARLIER WORKS. You see we all know artists voices change over years, and with the add influence of GANJA smoking your voice starts to get raspy as we now hear how buju sings. Now if your a true Reggae or Buju fan you would know yes he did sound like that back in the days because I have many mix tapes and records with him on there sounding like that. well to keep a long story short this is a must buy IF YOU LIKE OLD BUJU TUNES.

I am a true Buju fan and not once have I heard these tracks on the islands. It is as if this is nothing but a bootleg because of the various styles...many of the songs don't even sound like him...this is a disappointment to all and I would not recommend it...

Decent but certainly not de best from Buju..., June 6, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Quick (Audio CD)
Somehow I think that some of these songs were songs that he didn't release because his singing style is different. The riddim that moved me the most was Quick. It real decent. Anything Buju brings out is an instant hit!! He like Michael Jackson. Hits pon hits!!!

This album has some nice beats, but I was not impressed. I think it is a step down for Buju. I have all of his albums and this one ranks his lowest.

I believe that Buju is the best reggie singer at this present moment. His albums are getting better and better every time and I think we have not heard the best yet.
