There's a lot of satisfaction for an expert knitter in spending many hours creating an heirloom quality garment for a baby in fine Shetland wool. Once you've done that, or have decided not to do that, you need practical clothes in sturdy, washable yarns that you can knit up quickly. This book provides exactly that. I knitted one of the hats in an evening while watching TV, and it's a wonderful little hat.

The patterns are divided into blankets, socks/booties and leg warmers, hats, tops (including sweaters, vests, and a dress), and a final chapter with knitted pants, the classic diagonal-knit washcloth, and a felted diaper bag with pockets. This pretty much covers what a baby needs for everyday wear.

Each pattern includes a full-color photo of the item in use by an actual baby, the essential information about size and supplies, and a clear, accurate pattern in traditional knitting terms. This last point is important because knitting books written by designers who don't use traditional terms often require quite a bit of trial and error -- not what you want when you're knitting up a quick wardrobe for baby. There's also information about the yarn, suggestions for adapting the design to different colorways, and friendly notes. There are also, sprinkled throughout the book, tips for things like working with double pointed needles, using two circular needles as an alternative to dpns, or felting your knitting. They're added to patterns where they're needed, but they're in bright boxes, so you can easily find them and increase your knitting skills even if you're not knitting that particular item.

The patterns really are easy. The socks and hats use classic shaping (again, that's a good thing) but the sweaters have very simple shaping.

Great book! Easy to learn techniques especially for a first time knitter like myself. The baby models inside are also adorable.

Quick & Easy Baby Knits: 21 Cute Comfy Projects is a truly unique book for knitters. The first thing to catch my attention was that every pattern in the book is accompanied by photos of the stitches being made and a baby wearing the finished product. The photos are really clear and tells you the size the writer knitted and how old the baby in the pictures is, which is really helpful if you need to adjust the pattern for a different age.

I also really liked that the author took the time to talk about how the yarn feels and works up--it makes it much easier to know what yarn to choose for each pattern. Not least of all, though, I loved that the directions are given for beginners as well as experienced knitters. I'm not as talented a knitter as I'd like to be and knowing about the different stitches was incredibly helpful.
