5.0 out of 5 stars Love the British influence May 12, 2011
Format:Paperback
I've wanted this book ever since seeing a picture of her Rocky Road Brownies on her website, but what really got me interested was the British influence on this book - having lived in the UK there are a lot of baked goods that I didn't know I missed until now.

My favorite recipe so far are the sausage rolls - it's worth buying the book just for this recipe!
The lemon bread and butter pudding was a huge hit too.
The hot cross buns, Jaffa loaf, Sticky Toffee pudding cake and Lamingtons are all next on my list.

Carla also has lots of notes and variations for most recipes - which comes in handy when you find out at the last minute
that you've run out of one of the main ingredients. Even recipes for making your own soy creamer or english custard powder!

The instructions are clear and easy to follow and the recipes are laid out well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to follow and delicious, too! April 18, 2011
By Maddie3
Format:Paperback
While I am a non-vegan, I purchased this book as I have a few vegan friends and would like to have something to serve them when they are over. I have already made a few of the recipes (with the help of my young daughter!) and found them easy to follow. Unlike a previous commentator, I have not had difficulty finding any of the ingredients thus far. I was able to get everything at the large-ish suburban grocery store where I usually shop. I do appreciate a culinary adventure, so buying new ingredients does not phase me. So far the family favourites are the Balsamic Fruit Tarts, the No-Bake Chocolate Truffle Inspired Cookies and (my personal favourite) the the Pecan Date Cookies. My kids do eat (and enjoy!) fruit and we love rhubarb....just waiting for it to get big enough to pick from the garden to try the recipes with rhubarb...especially the Strawberry Rhubarb Crumble Top Pie.

5.0 out of 5 stars A baking gem April 19, 2011
Format:Paperback
I've never bought any baking books before, mostly because I don't really have a sweet tooth. I do sometimes want to take baked goods to work or events though, so I thought this book would be a good place to start. Naturally I started with the savoury items though. The cheese and onion pasties are delicious - they are something I grew up with and this recipe captures them perfectly. Even my cheese eating husband loved them. The spanokopita loaf, lightly toasted and served with vegan cream cheese made a fabulous snack for visiting (non vegan) friends - and kept beautifully in the freezer. The pea and asparagus tart is delightful, perfect for picnics. My confidence was up so I tried a few of the sweeter items too. Again I grew up with shortbread so I made a batch and took it to work where non vegans devoured it. The rhubarb and strawberry pie was a summer delight. I've just spotted the eccles cake, which yet again I grew up eating. They're next on my list.

For non experienced bakers like myself, there's a fabulous introduction which describes all the terms like creaming and beating which many authors expect you to understand. Baking using yeast very helpfully gets its own chapter, and I'm sure I'll be returning to it.

The greatest thing about this book is its breadth. Don't like fruit? Start with all the chocolate ideas. Not keen on pie? Make cookies. No sweet tooth? Work through the savouries. Fear of baking? Try the "no bake" ideas. Allergies? All helpfully listed. Experienced baker? Move straight to the yeast or some of the more complex recipes.

Whether an experienced baker or new to it like I was, I can promise you'll find lots of scrummy things to make here. Well worth 5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good book for a not so good baker April 25, 2011
By K. Lahn
Format:Paperback
I've read some of the negative review here and am a little baffled. Baking has never been my strong suit, especially yeast baked goods. I have made many recipes from this book and have had excitingly good results (even with the yeasted breads). I made the hot crossed buns and the sandwich bread. Both turned out fantastic.

The author is from the UK, so there are a couple of recipes that may have hard to find ingredients in the U.S. (custard powder is an example, I did find this at a specialty store because I just had to make the recipe!). I find most of my favorite cook books have some ingredients I don't have in my pantry or that are tricky to find in the regular grocery store. I either don't make those or I find the ingredients online. Most of the recipes use fairly easy to find ingredients. I don't think I own a single cookbook that I like 100% of the recipes. This one has some really great stuff.

As far as being kid-friendly, there are many recipes in here that kids in our neighborhood loved (I like to share). I guess it just depends on the kid. As someone else said, it doesn't make this a bad book, it just make it one that particular reader's family might not get a lot of use out of it. It would be great to be able to see the table of contents. I always like to see that before I buy.

I, for one, give this a huge thumbs up as it has made me a better baker. The Car Tire Cookies will rock your world. Oh and the hazelnut bundt cake recipe was requested by one of my vegan-phobic supervisors. If you only like standard cookie recipes like oatmeal, chocolate chip, peanut butter and sugar cookies there are a few good recipes in here for you. If you like a great variety of baked goods, this book is a must. I hope the bad reviews don't turn people away.
