Book Description

Quick Guides November 7, 2000

Even though music production has moved into the digital domain, modern synthesisers invariably use analogue synthesis techniques. The reason is simple--analogue synthesis is flexible and versatile, and it's relatively easy for us to understand. The basics are the same for all analogue synths, and you'll quickly be able to adapt the principles to any instrument, to edit existing sounds and create exciting new ones. This book describes:

  • How analogue synthesis works
  • The essential modules every synthesiser has
  • The three steps to synthesis
  • How to create phat bass sounds
  • How to generate filter sweeps
  • Advanced synth modules
  • How to create simple and complex synth patches
  • Where to find soft synths on the Web
If you want to take your synthesiser--of the hardware or software variety--past the presets, and program your own sounds and effects, this practical and well-illustrated book tells you what you need to know.

This review is from: Quick Guide to Analogue Synthesis (Quick Guides) (Paperback)
I am a novice in the field of synthesizer music production, and this "guide" was my first attempt to gain some info about the genre. While the author covered every key facet that I had hoped for, I found the last few chapters to be rushed without enough detail to be understoond clearly. Perhaps this was an effort to keep the book to only 60 pages (index included). The complexity of the subject matter did indeed become greater near the last few chapters, but I feel there was a lack of clarity in his explanations.
The editing was very poor, and I stumbled over 3 or 4 major misprints that hindered my learning until I realized they were errors.
This is a terrific guide if you need to "brush up" on your lingo or you have forgotten the key elements of synthesis, but as a newbie I gained less than I had hoped for with this booklet.
