Review

A creative and useful account of this Mom's experience in raising two 'good' kids. I especially liked the information on challenging gifted children and how to deal effectively with a difficult teacher. --Jane M. Healy, Ph.D. Educational Psychologist and author of Your Child's Growing Mind: Brain Development and Learning from Birth to Adolescence

For most parents, nothing is more important than bringing up strong, moral, caring, happy children. At the same time, we're so busy that we wonder if this goal is even possible in the 21st century. Virginina Bentz proves that, yes, it is. Her quick, easy-to-read book offers simple solutions to complex problems. Plus, her poignant honesty about her own joys and struggles reminds parents that we're all in this boat together. --Dr. Michele Borba, author of 21 books including 12 Simple Secrets Real Moms Know, Nobody Likes me, Everybody Hates Me!, and No More Misbehavin'

Virginia Bentz writes a heartfelt book in which she shares her insight, wisdom and experience as a parent. --Dr Jenn Berman, author

Product Description

Parents today face a jungle of dangers, as pop culture presses premature sex, underage drinking, and drug use on their children. In the Quick Guide to Good Kids, Virginia Bentz shows how parents can be a strong line of defense for their children, even when things get tough. Even illness and divorce and loss of income won't stand in the way of good kids.

Bentz shares her personal experiences raising a girl and a boy, frankly telling what strategies worked, and what didn't. Her "good kids" are now in college, and more importantly, they are pleasant individuals you'd want to have around.

Bentz's strategies are simple:

•Spend lots of time with babies.

•Be supportive -- don't criticize.

•Get behind the teacher's rules.

•Be part of your child's audience.

•By example, teach that jobs get done.

•Protect adolescent girls from harm.

•Know where your teenagers are.

•Admit when you're wrong. Apologize!

The book's final chapter offers great resources to make childrearing more fun and to get help resolving issues.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yes, Virginia, we CAN raise good kids!, January 18, 2008
This book is proof that big, important things can be wrapped up nicely in smaller packages. Virgina Bentz's guide is indeed an easy read for parents (or would-be's), but in the most agreeable sense - it's like sitting down with a wise, understanding friend who is willing and able to dig into her own annal of experiences and easily share them with you. The author never pontificates, but states her child-rearing life lessons clearly and unreservedly, in a way that says to parents, "We're all in this together, trust me!" Unlike many books on this subject, this one does not limit itself to diaper-changing, sleepless nights, and the diagnosis of various learning disabilities in the presechool-aged child: Virginia takes on child-raising as a full-time, real-life scenario - right up on through pre-adolescence, adolescence and early adulthood, no mean feat! The fact (which she does not dwell upon)that much of her child-raising was accomplished as a single parent will impact and hopefully inspire other parents even more. A brilliant little book, one which I have given and plan to give to every new (and not-so-new) parent that I know. It's a truly helpful, encouraging alternative and/or addition to the many kid-as-subject books already out there...worth every penny and much more.
