Book Description

October 1, 2003
Good nutrition is the cornerstone of optimal health--feeling good and looking good. In this title, Dr. Whitaker has put together a time-tested cuisine that will promote the wellness and energy you need to enjoy life.

Unlike extreme regimes that call for restrictions of a certain food group (fat in some cases, carbohydrates in others), the recommended recipes in this book are pretty "normal." There are no specific items you have to eat in abundance, nor is anything completely off-limits forever. An occasional indulgence is good for the soul! As the reader has access to his own personal favorites among a variety of fresh, tasty, nutritious foods, it is easy to make this cookbook a mainstay.

In fact, Dr. Whitaker does not like to call his nutrition program a "diet." The word smacks of deprivation and misery. Let's think of it instead as a lifelong nutrition program of fresh, wholesome, mostly unprocessed foods that contribute to health and vitality, and leave you feeling satisfied at the end of each meal.

About the Author

Dr. Julian Whitaker is the founder of the Whitaker Wellness Institute medical clinic, offering an intensive program of diet, exercise, nutritional and herbal supplementation, and lifestyle changes. Dr. Whitaker writes the newsletter Health and Healing (ranked by Time magazine as one of the Top 10 Health publications in the country), with a subscription of over half a million, and has written books, many of which consistently make the New York Times bestseller list (e.g. Reversing Diabetes, Reversing Heart Disease, Shed 10 Years in Ten Weeks, A Guide to Natural Healing, Is Heart Surgery Necessary and The Pain Relief Breakthrough). He is the founder of the American Preventive Medicine Association and a member of many professional societies advocating the preservation of good health and the nutritional treatment of disease.

The Whitaker Wellness Institute in Newport Beach, California was created 20 years ago. It combines traditional and alternative medicine to its patients all under one roof. Julian Whitaker, M.D. grew the institute out of his passionate conviction that modern medicine has lost touch with its original goals: to treat the person, not the disease, and to restore health using the safest, least invasive therapies possible.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, sound information on good nutrition, September 29, 2005

If you are one of the many people looking for sound nutritional information amidst the sea of confusion, I recommend this cookbook. The recipes are simple, easy to follow and very tasty. You will never think about vegetables the same way again!

Even more importantly, the last section features a breakdown of the research that has been done linking diet to disease, and helps to demystify the relationships. They also list recommended websites and resources for additional nutritional information.

I particularly enjoy that they are not trying to sell anything, or convince us to "diet". They are simply providing a new way to think about what's for dinner, and some great solutions for healthy living.

2.0 out of 5 stars Results disappointing, January 9, 2007

This review is from: Quick & Healthy: Recipes for Vibrant Living (Paperback)
I really didn't like this cookbook at all. I am very into healthy, low-fat cooking, but I want recipes to be simple and turn out good. Pretty much every recipe I tried in this book (except for the pecan pancakes, which are quite good), turned out flat and tasteless, and often I had to purchase special ingredients and put in a lot of effort and cooking time. I also didn't find too much of a variety here--the recipes are categorized by mealtime so if you are looking, for example, for a lot of creative ways to make salmon or shrimp, you won't find it here. The health information is useful and educational, but doesn't add much to the quality of this book as a cookbook.

5.0 out of 5 stars "O" Oprah magazine gives it a great revieww, June 9, 2004

The review in the June 2004 issue of "O" was enough to entice me to want to read it and try some of the recipes. If you don't want to buy the book borrow it from your local library, and if they do not have it request that they purchase it.
