1.0 out of 5 stars Not worth the $$
This book does not address commonly used drugs nor does it address cordis and swan catheters. It is a difficult reference to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Critical Care Quick Review, August 8, 2001

I work in a Level 1 Trauma Hospital in the Medical and Cardiac Critical care unit, which means really sick patients, with a high acuity level. This book is one of the most user-friendly, comprehensive, how-to manuals I have ever come across. In fact, we have adopted this book for part of our hospital-wide critical care classes with the nursing staff. The detailed descriptions of what it is, why it is, and how to perform the many procedures that we use in critical care were accurately and simply written for even the earliest beginner to understand. It's updated material and medications were current to the info we also use today. I have not found any other book to rival its complete and thorough information. I highly recommend this manual for any nurse, either considering to go into, or in the critical care field!

5.0 out of 5 stars Most user friendly reference, August 23, 2001
I originally purchased this book when I was new to critical care. Recently my copy was misplaced, and I find it difficult to use any other book! It is small enough to have with you at work, and is easy to look up important facts quickly in an ICU setting. There isn't a lot of "fluff" and just the ncecessary information.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful handbook, July 26, 2001
This is a wonderful handbook of the most important ICU facts. It is very easy to read and has just about everything you need to know about caring for a patient in critical care. Since I have bought the book it has served as a reference guide as well as a study tool for the CCRN exam. I highly recommend this book to any ICU nurse!

5.0 out of 5 stars Quick Reference to Critical Care, August 19, 2005
I first bought this as recommended reference by my nursing school during our ICU rotation, and now, working both Level I Trauma as well as in ICU, I still carry this book with me every day. It is concise and yet still covers all neccesary info on each subject. Often, nurses working with me will buy a copy after borrowing mine a few times. Just keep an eye on this book, I'm on my 3rd copy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding, November 17, 2006
This is an outstanding little book for critical care nurses. It has a plethora of useful information including what all those obscure signs are (like Quincke's sign), common drugs and lab values. Plus more really nifty stuff. And it covers all the body systems, not just cardiovascular. I don't know why Amazon states that the title is "Quick Reference to Critical Care:Evaluation and Treatment of Cardiovascular Disorders". That is not the title on my book. My book is simply titled "Quick Reference to Critical Care". Great book that is worth every penny.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the one I carry every day to work!, August 9, 2009

This review is from: Quick Reference to Critical Care (Paperback)
As a new nurse in the ICU, I was fortunate to have a didactic critical care class. That being said, the information was overwhelming and not broken down into easily digestible nuggets. This book gives you "the down and dirty" of what you need to know when you need to know it as the index and table of contents are accurate and easy to use. Finding info fast that tells me what I need is what this book offers me. I own Kathy White's fast facts as well and know that many ICU nurses love that reference, however this book is what I carry and turn to for information. Everyone where I work that has looked at this book loves it, and it fits in my side cargo pocket easily too!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book, but one mistake found, December 10, 2008
This review is from: Quick Reference to Critical Care (Paperback)
I am a cardiovascular technician instructor and am always looking for quick reference materials to help with teaching as well as patient care. This book is outstanding! It is compact enough to carry around, but carries volumes of useful information. We even tested it out to see how comprehensive it is by looking up items that are frequently overlooked by other critical care references, such as Ashman's phenomenon and Wellen's T waves (both of which are in here). The information given is just enough to help you out, with great diagrams to further help with understanding or for memory aids.

The mistake that I found is on page 397 of the 3rd ed. The diagram states that the illustration is of the Doppler spectal display of the mitral valve. The actual diagram is of a comparison of monomorphic vs. biphasic defibrillation waveforms (with the same diagram also shown on page 105). Even with this editorial overlook, this book is extremely valuable and I would most definitely recommend it to anyone working in any part of critical care medicine!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Mentor Reference!, August 24, 2009
This review is from: Quick Reference to Critical Care (Paperback)
I am an ICU nurse. I am mentoring a new graduate. This is an amazing book that is broken down simply enough so that she can grasp individual sections and indepently guide her towards a more indepth understanding with its great referencing points. Yet, it is comprehensive enough that a more experienced nurse can truly appreciate it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for critical care, September 19, 2008
This review is from: Quick Reference to Critical Care (Paperback)
This is an excellent book for all critical care nurses. It is succinct and comprehensive at the same time. It explains things easily and lets you know what you need to know regarding issues such as DKA, etc. It even has a section on different drug calculations when hanging a drip (ie dobutamine), etc. A must have reference for every critical care nurse!
