About the Author

Valerie G.A. Grossman, BSN, CEN

Ms. Grossman is a seasoned professional with over 19 years of front line experience in the areas of emergency nursing, urgent care nursing, and telephone triage nursing. Lessons learned from her roles of staff nurse, clinical manager, quality improvement coordinator, and head nurse have provided valuable learning opportunities, making her an invaluable source and educator in the area of triage assessment and customer service.

She has had the opportunity to work in a variety of settings including small rural hospitals, major urban trauma centers, an inner city urgent care center, and a home-based telephone triage program. This variety of work settings has created her global views of quality health care and her belief in the delivery of excellent health care for everyone.

This book started out as a 20-page project to educate emergency department nurses how to perform accurate triage assessments of incoming patients. Over time, it grew into a complete resource for the health care professional who deals with patients.

This text is appropriate for anyone who performs triage assessments including school health offices, correctional infirmaries, urgent care centers, physician offices, ambulatory care centers, pre-hospital emergency medical services, schools of nursing, nursing education departments, occupational medicine departments, telephone triage settings, and emergency departments.

Ms. Grossman is an accomplished writer with many publications in professional journals as well as a chapter in a pediatric nursing textbook. She is a consulting editor for the Journal of Emergency Nursing and was a consulting editor for Faulkner and Gray's 2000: Directory of Medical Call Centers. She served as the national chairperson of the Emergency Nurses Association's Telephone Triage Special Interest Group for 3 years, and is currently the Chair of the Content Team for the Telephone Nursing Certification Exam being written by the National Certification Corporation. She is a national speaker on triage and an international nursing consultant in this area as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-have for all ED nurses, January 29, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Quick Reference to Triage (Spiral-bound)
Finally an RN Triage guide book plus. This book was written by somebody who has been there and done that.

I recommend this book for nurses who plan to go through the ED experience. This book will guide them through the difficult and trying times.

The "Pearls of Wisdom" Chapter is a definite treasure trove of experience that each RN can relate to.

To top it all, the book size fits a lab coat pocket so one can carry it all of the time or store it in a locker for that essential quick-glance.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book should be on the reading list of every nurse!, January 26, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Quick Reference to Triage (Spiral-bound)
This is definitely a MUST READ AND KEEP HANDY reference/guide to facilitating an effective and appropriate triage process in any setting, with any patient. Written primarily for the urgent/emergency care nurse, this book is easy to navigate and will be a valuable resource in every ER, outpatient clinic, physicians office, school health center and medical library. I can see it reaching the very top of the "required" reading list for ALL front-line health professionals; especially telehealth/telephone triage nurses.

New nurses will love the "pearls of triage wisdom" section. Experienced nurses will be delighted to finally have such a comprehensive listing of cultural considerations. The Post test feature is a great guide for self directed learners, and would also assist nursing managers in the evaluation of staff competency. The inclusion of humor in many of the illustrations created by John F. Aarne, (who happens to be Val's father) makes this publication not only a incredibly useful educational tool but also a nursing treasure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Someone has finally done it!, January 18, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Quick Reference to Triage (Spiral-bound)
Finally, someone has waded through the mass of ambiguity and arrived at a top notch presentation of the triage function. This book is solid and useful, and it will very likely become the benchmark for any others. I highly recommend this as a read for the serious health care professional, whether in an emergency department or a private physician office.
