An excellent way to keep your mind agile and thinking originally,
By Charles Ashbacher (Marion, Iowa United States) - See all my reviews (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (VINE VOICE) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER)
This review is from: Quick-to-Solve Brainteasers (Mensa) (Paperback)
This collection of "simple" puzzles requires that you consider the problem from all angles, at times including dissections of figures. For example, problem number 2 is:
"What number do you subtract half from to get zero?" The answer is 8 because if you take the top half off, a zero is left. This kind of sideways thinking is very good mental gymnastics that will keep your brain sharp, something that is even more essential in the modern world. I read a recent article where workers that suffered through extended layoffs that are going back to work are finding that they are suffering from a collective "skill rot" in the sense that the skills now needed to perform the job have changed. It is very difficult to predict what skills will be needed a few years from now, so the only general protection against individual obsolescence is to maintain a sharp and agile mind. Books like this are known to aid that process, so this one can be recommended both as a source of fun and amusement as well as an aid against unemployment. |
