Been using Quickbooks for 14 years now, I don't like the fact they force you to upgrade every 3 years. I just upgraded to Pro 2014 and I hate the new look. Why not allow users to upgrade and keep the same look as the previous version? If you use payroll and auto renew they charge about double what you can buy the current upgrade with payroll included, Which is why I upgraded this year. It took most of a Sunday to install the software and get the payroll activated. When trying to activate the payroll I entered my EIN and quickbooks determined I had been using payroll so it tries to get you to stick with your current subscription and pay the renewal, which is about 400 bucks if I remember correctly. Took me hours to get the payroll subscription I PAID FOR with the upgrade to work. They also force you to enter a valid credit card for the auto renewal and I hate the fact I need to do that to get payroll working since I will NEVER auto renew. I cringe at the thought of them having access to my credit card. The reason I am writing this review now is because I received 2 emails today from Intuit payroll thanking me for my order (installed the upgrade a month ago) and it looks like they are going to start charging a per employee monthly fee if you are using enhanced payroll. They must have a room full of people trying to figure out how to nickle and dime their customers and I am really getting sick of Intuit. So sick I will probably start doing payroll manually after this subscription expires or if they start charging me a per employee monthly fee.

I have been a QuickBooks Pro and Enhanced Payroll (they changed the name to Enhanced Payroll several years ago) for years. I am a small business consultant and do books for several of my clients. I am also a professor of finance at a large university. Although QuickBooks has risen to become the "standard" in business accounting, I am questioning how long they can last at that high pinnacle. First, they stop supporting software after about 5 years even though users of their Payroll software must purchase updates annually. Second, if you are a follower of QuickBooks pricing, you will notice prices going up each year by $50 per year. QuickBooks recently sent me a letter offering me a "valued customer" discount of $499.00 for both QuickBooks and Enhanced Payroll software (you can buy both for about $299.00 on Amazon). Last year, I renewed my Enhanced Payroll subscription with Amazon for $195.99. This year the same renewal is $249.99 (much more if you allow QuickBooks to automatically renew your subscription -- they require a credit card number to proceed with your install). Third, when you get the software, you cannot load it and make it all work without help from QuickBooks phone support. I end up on the phone each year for at least and hour. In addition, the support is not from the US, so they don't usually understand what you need help with and you must be transferred several times. When you update QuickBooks Pro, there are other problems, such as formatting your old version files to the new version software. Files need to be corrected on your computer hard drive, with the help from support. That total software update call can last more than a couple of hours. Unfortunately, I have too much invested with QuickBooks to change now, but if you are starting out, you may want to investigate PeachTree, or some other competing software products before you get in too deep.

Hi G. Barrett,
I'm sorry to hear about the frustrating experience you have had with updating your payroll and QuickBooks. This is not the experience we are striving for at Intuit. We are committed to developing easy, straightforward financial tools that help you today and grow with you tomorrow. But it's a balancing act - making QuickBooks better and easier to use while still supporting older versions. So we offer support and add-on services for the current version of QuickBooks and the two previous versions.

The auto-renewal process is in place primarily to avoid a disruption in payroll services to our customers when their current subscription expires. Intuit does everything we can to manage our internal costs while preserving the quality of our products and services and to meet the changing needs of our customers. As small businesses have become more mobile and even globally interconnected our customers are requiring more advanced solutions and continually evolving products to help them be more efficient and productive. Intuit also really strives to balance the value we offer with the increasing costs of doing business. Enhanced Payroll continues to be one of the most competitively priced offerings in the payroll market. Amazon often offers the best prices on our products and we are thrilled when our customers are able to find a good deal. In order to keep our products in so many retail locations we choose to partner with the retailers instead of compete with them on pricing which allows you to shop around make the purchase where you feel comfortable.

I can understand your frustration with the activation process, to prevent you from being charged for more than one payroll service we do require you to call in to our support team if we see you have an active payroll service with us. Please let us know if there is a step in the activation process where you are getting stuck or receiving an error message. I'd like to help you out and/or update our product and instructions so that it does not continue to be an issue.

Please reach out to me at Ask_Intuit@intuit.com Attn: Staci so I make sure you are setup smoothly and don't continue to have trouble.

We hope to keep serving your payroll and accounting needs and appreciate the feedback.
Sincerely,
Staci

I have been using this software for over 8yrs without major problems, but this latest upgrade is nothing but TROUBLE!
To start, it took over 6h, in 2 days, just to get the Payroll activated (over the phone with support from the Philippines, no way to get US agents...)
It no longer allows you to use the data file over the network, and it's now crashing the app every time I'm entering the time for setting up the payroll - Error 17189 (no KB for this error in the website!)
Calling tech support (OVERSEAS) also takes at least 30min just to get an agent, so you know already the drill...
After spending all this time, effort and money to do my work I have not been able to complete a simple task of making my paycheck, overdue by 3 days and counting…
I only upgraded to 2014 from 2012 because my payroll subscription was up to renewal and the price of the Basic was almost the same as getting the Enhanced with the newer software version!
Do yourself a favor: DO NOT upgrade to 2014 just yet, especially if you are using Win 8.1 x64!
Shame on Intuit for getting too big to care for customers, this is what happens when there is no competition in the market!
If I could switch to an alternative accounting software, I would do it in a heart bit!
I'm an IT pro, and may not know much about accounting, but when it comes to my world (software management) I can tell you it will be a very disappointing and time consuming process.

I have mixed feelings about Quickbooks 2014 having just upgraded from 2011. On the one hand it does feel slicker and looks a lot neater, on the other hand it has some frustrating design flaws, mainly to do with organizing and resizing windows within the program. I could write a small essay about that. The new features are quite helpful though and all the information you need is right at your fingertips.

But what I wanted to say in this review is that Intuit are a bunch of liars. They really are. Their sales reps will tell you anything to make a sale. Let me explain: with the end of my payroll subscription approaching, I was sent an email offer by Intuit to purchase Pro 2014 plus Enhanced Payroll for $499. Having a look around Amazon I found the offer you're looking at now, seemingly the same thing for only $279. So I called Intuit to ask a rep whether they were the same thing and if not, what the difference was.

She told me in no uncertain terms that the email offer Intuit had sent me included a year's payroll subscription for unlimited employees, while the Amazon version carried an extra charge of $2/employee per month. Adding things up in my head it looked like the $499 offer would work out cheaper. I asked her if she was doubly sure of her claim. She reassured me that she was, but that she'd go away and ask her supervisor to make triply sure. After a short pause she came back and said yes, Intuit's email offer included payroll for unlimited employees at no extra cost. I almost bought the thing there and then, but something - perhaps all of my prior experience with Intuit - told me to go away and think about it.

In the course of "thinking about it," I took a long hard look at the offer Intuit had emailed me.

J. Phillips,
I am sorry to hear about your frustrating experience with the sales team, this is not what we are striving for at Intuit. I have already provided feedback to the management of our sales department on the confusion of the offer you received and we are working to improve our processes. I am glad to hear you like the new look and feel of the 2014 product. Feel free to email me with details around the frustrating design flaws and I'll be sure to pass them on to our product team as they love to hear directly from our customers.
Thanks for your honest feedback!
