4.0 out of 5 stars Amazon is great, Intuit will try to soak you.
It was cheeper to buty the new 2010 version with payroll through AMAZON than it was to just upgrade the payroll software. Just note that INTUIT will try to soak you with all these add on options that (I feel) are unneeded. The 2010 version just brings additional ways they try to charge you more for additional services. Otherwise I like it.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK for general use
Quickbooks is OK for general use. It becomes more difficult to work with when you have more industry specific items to work with sometimes. I would like to see a longer Item List description. Part numbers can be very long sometimes and it doesn't leave room for a text description.

Intuit also takes your credit card info and automatically renews your payroll...

great price on amazon for this combo. payroll is for 1 year subscription to the service. installation was a little difficult and annoying since i upgraded from the quickbooks simple start version but i went through the same annoyances with installing simple start. i was able to figure it out in the end and migrated my old information to my new instance. pro is pretty nice but i needed a book to help get me get through proper flow/use of its functions.

Quickbooks Pro 2010 is easy to install... easy to move my records over ... easy to continue running the office instead of trying to 'work things out'.
As always, Amazon is my preferred way to order anything! Everything is smooth and uncomplicated.

This product was just what we were looking for. Three days after placing the order we were loading the software on our computer. It takes a little time to figure out but is now going to save us a lot of time & money when doing our payroll.

Quickbooks is OK for general use. It becomes more difficult to work with when you have more industry specific items to work with sometimes. I would like to see a longer Item List description. Part numbers can be very long sometimes and it doesn't leave room for a text description.

Intuit also takes your credit card info and automatically renews your payroll subscription without your permission. You can't shut off the auto renew either. You have to call them after you find out that they have charged you and ask for a refund. They also set up a charge twice so that you have two authorizations holding your money for several days. They may only run one charge but they authorize it twice.

Overall they have the market for a general small business accounting system. I'd like to see something else with better pricing but I understand that they are all similar. Quickbooks basically does the job. For the price I guess it is OK. Industry specific software for our industry costs $5000-7000. So I use Quickbooks for the time being until it is worth us spending that kind of money and making our life mush easier.

4.0 out of 5 stars QB is a good Product - They own the market for a reason..., August 26, 2010

I have to add my two cents on the raging debat about quickbooks. First and foremost, yes I purchased it as a small first time business owner and this has been my impression so far:

- People are screaming about only being able to use the product for 3 years - these seem to me like the people who buy a lucky t-shirt and want to keep it for 10 years. 3 Years is an eternity in technology and you are paying 150 or 200 bucks for a business application ... that is like 40 dollars a year, yeah Intuit is becoming rich off of you... you probably spend more in Statbucks than on Quickbooks - you are running a business for christ sake... get over it and cough up the cheap price of admission... it probably saved you thousands already in an audit. Should Intuit give you free bank downloads for life for a couple hundred bucks???
- Enough already about bashing the product - simple fact is MS fell out of the race and Quickbooks owns the market. If you are using an accountant - probably 90% of them are using quickbooks you will save time at tax time since they can read your files. It is an excellent product than single owner businesses use and also 200m companies use. You can talk about freeware or peachtree (complicated) or if you want real business osftware go buy MS dynamics/xapta or oracle or sap at about $50k - $200k... Wuickbooks is a bargain
- Enough already that they are trying to sell you stuff. I read all the horror stories and was ready to fight when I registered the product... My registration call was quick, professional and they asked me two meager questions to upsell me merchant services and payroll (already have it in the bundle) and that was it. I am in sales and I hate being sold more than anyone but I was surpirsed how professional, quick and efficient the call is so that myth is completely busted.

So I am not ever compelled to write a review unless I think someone got it completely wrong... in this case the naysayers did. Yes it is intimidating for the novice users like me to setup becasue you dont understand accounting... you dont understand a P&L and debits/credits and double entry, etc. Well you need to learn it or use spreadsheets or hire an accountant to charge you a couple hundred a year to do your books. But Quickbooks does what it is supposed to do and in my opinion (may be blasphemy here) is a great value, dare I say cheap for all the functionality it provides managing your business...

1.0 out of 5 stars NO FOR EVERYONE, February 8, 2011

I purchased this product when my brother, the farm manager, was killed in a farm accident. I needed something to do payroll for our 2 part time employees. I still need something to do the payroll.

This is not for everyone. We have a small operation (800 acres and 175 head of cattle). This software takes hours to set up. It is designed for every business. So it really doesn't fit any business. The setup killed me. Although I have 30 years budget and accounting experience I couldn't set this up for our small business. It was much too complicated.

Intuit is not the best company to deal with. Although it alleges to provide payroll you still have to get a subscription to do it. I've used QUICKEN for years. But they have a time bomb in QUICKEN. After a few years it will no long access your checking or stock accounts so you are forced to up grade. The last time this happened it took me five working days to install it.

I'm looking elsewhere for simple accounting software. You might want to do the same.

This is an excellent value, considering the separate cost of Quickbooks Pro and then Payroll by themselves.

I needed to get this for my business as Quickbooks (for no good reason that I can tell) requires you to get the latest version every three years if you want to use their payroll. And considering what it costs to pay an accountant or other service to do your payroll for you (even for 1 to 3 employees), you definitely do want to use Quickbooks for payroll! So it's good...and it's bad, because obviously there's no reasonable cause to have to buy the latest version of Quickbooks other than that they require it of you (I can't think of one feature I need in the new version...)

But that being said, this was a very good deal. And contrary to what some other reviewers have warned about, I did not have to make one single phone call to validate / activate my software or payroll service. I think the other reviewers must not have explored their options fully, you can do this with a couple of clicks online.

So great deal, Amazon!

Incase you are like me, a complete novice at accounting and payroll I can tell you this can be pretty useless. I couldn't get this to do anything really for payroll. I ended up buying some payroll subscription that was like 300 dollars extra a year to be able to do something with the software. It comes with no instructions whatsoever! You either have to chat, call or get a book to get some idea of how to use it. The Payroll customer support, however, is outstanding. They guide you through what you need assitance with and are so patient. 5 stars to them. Don't like that you have to pay extra for it to do what should've just been standard. Nonetheless, it appears that once I get a hang of it (I bought a book to help me) this may have a lot to offer.

The enhanced payroll module is easy to use, understandable, and using the Federal Deposit enhancement is so simple. This program is as good as, and better than most, much more expensive modules that attach to the overall accounting program.
