Awful, virtually useless, February 24, 2012
This review is from: QuickBooks Point of Sale 5.0 Retail Management Software (CD-ROM)
I'll start by saying this software is long out-of-date, this review being written in 2012. We have fought with the software for 6 years now.
There are so many things wrong with this software that I hardly no where to begin.
Bugs, bugs, bugs. The software crashes, literally, on a daily basis. Luckily no major harm ever seems to arise and the software can just be restarted. Sometimes it crashes accessing inventory, sometimes it crashes accessing customer data, sometimes it crashes while "checking licenses". It has always done this and we just basically live with it.
Quirks. The software could not possibly have been designed by anyone who has ever actually worked in a retail environment.
Faxes: the software has no provision for a vendor fax number, yet has an option for vendor email. When I accessed them about this they told me that no one really uses faxes anymore.
Part numbers. If you order an item from two different wholesale vendors who happen to use the same part number (any item and any number) Quickbooks won't let you. They told me that this rarely happens and isn't a concern. The solution is to dummy up part numbers with asterisks or something.
Minimum order quantities or case qtys. Not supported.
Customer names. All customer's must have a Last Name. If it's a company account it still must have a last name.
Individual line comments on purchase orders, receipts, anything. Not supported.
All of these items where supported by our DOS POS software from the 80s.
Other quirks.
Sometimes random data entry boxes are grayed out for no reason. Closing windows and reopening them usually fixes it.
Updates: sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. Again, opening and closing dialog boxes a bunch of times usually fixes it.
Really, this could go on and on but as the software is already long obsolete, I think this pretty much summarizes it. I have no idea how Quickbooks is the name brand that it is.
