Amazon.com Review

A large part of a doctor's job is measurement and observation--doctors can't make accurate diagnoses and treatment plans without an accurate picture of your body's condition. The same philosophy goes for personal finance. You have to have a sustainable, organized record-keeping system in place before you can plan for the future. That's the thinking behind Quicken 2000: The Official Guide, which shows you how to use the Windows version of Quicken 2000 to organize your accounts. Maria Langer--an experienced communicator who has written several highly regarded software books--documents Quicken 2000 with level-headed descriptions of real-world money situations. If Quicken can handle your personal accounting needs (and it probably can), you'll find the how-to data you need here.

Langer competently explains the fundamentals of computerized personal finance (including bank accounts and loans) and goes into great depth on using Quicken to record investment transactions. Explanations of reporting, graphing, and Quicken's "Easy Answer" feature are simple to follow. In addition to the straight software information, this book includes some solid personal finance advice you can use to reduce your debt, cut your expenses, and improve the performance of your investments. Locating the details you want can be a bit of a challenge because of Quicken's intricate structure, but you'll be happy with the explanations you find here. --David Wall

Topics covered: All aspects of personal finance (as assisted by Quicken 2000 for Windows), setting up the program (the parts that reside on your computer as well as those that live on the Internet), recording transactions, setting up recurring transactions, recording and analyzing investment activity, generating tables and graphs, using Quicken.com, and improving your financial situation.

This is the book that should have accompanied the software, still leaving the need for a third party book that actually explains what features do what and when, why and how to use them. This book, in instance after instance gives no more information than the program gives, leaving you quite in the dark as how, and whether or not to perform a given activity. I will now buy a third party book on Quicken with the hope of learning everything 'The Official Guide' and the software didn't explain.

I had some trouble finding instructions I wanted. I get the impression that this book was taken from the Quicken help files because you can get the same info by choosing Help on the menu in the Quicken program.
Maybe its my fault and this book just isn't for me, but I got more out of the other title I bough from Amazon. Not a bad book though.

If you're looking for nuts and bolts help, this is not the book. I'm still searching for how to enter accrued interest on a muni bond.
I thought this would be a helpful reference as I migrated from Microsoft Money to Quicken. It's easier to go the trial and error route.
I'm beginning to like Quicken. But this book is now serving admirably as a doorstop.

Quicken 2000 utilizes the Internet in more ways than one to help you gain control of your finances and make more informed financial decisions. With all of the bells and whistles that accompany Q2000 this book really helps the user gain the knowledge and experience needed while navigating through the software.
Quicken 2000: The Official Guide will show you how to track your investments, balance your checkbook, update prices for your automobile and other assets and really help plan for the future. This is a good book that covers the basics when dealing with online transactions through Quicken. It does not go into great detail about the software; it just gives you enough information to set up your accounts properly. However, this is the biggest mistake that most users make (myself included) is not setting up the different accounts properly. It has excellent step by step examples, tips and snapshots that guide the user through setting up a new account and configuring it to receive the information electronically. It also helps the user plan for the future, set up a budget and arrange all of your current assets correctly. All explanations are clear, concise and very easy to follow, it has really helped me become more productive when using Q2000. This is the book that should have been shipped with the software.

I speak as a novice Quicken user. Suddenly, as the result of a family crisis, I had to use Quicken right away and get competent fast. I ordered The Official Guide by Maria Langer, and it has saved me. The directions are clear and not too long to read while you do the work. Not only is Quicken a program that will take care of its user (anticipating almost every need), Ms. Langer knows the things we are going to need from it, tells us how to find our way, and gives us a resource we can return to again and again. If you need straightforward help you can rely on, this is the book for you.

This book was moderately useful in handling routine issues, but anything advanced, especially technical glitches, were not even mentioned. Superseded by the 2001 version.

I was looking for a book that would help me organize my finances using Quicken 2000. If you are looking for a "How to" book, this book is not for you. This book simply describes the functions of Quicken 2000 without going into a lot of detail about why, when, or how you should organize your finances.

Regardless, this book is well written and is easier to access and read than the online manual.
