Excellent Way for the First Time User to Get Started,
By
This review is from: Quicken 2007 For Dummies (Paperback)
I got audited once by the IRS. When I went in I took four or five inches of paper, most of it generated on the computer by Quicken. Any question I was asked I simply pulled out the appropriate printout to show how I had gotten to the number I had put on the form. I can't say how much having all this documentation saved, but I suspect it was substantial.
Quicken is probably the most popular generalized accounting packaged in use by individuals and small businesses. Over the years it has gotten better and better. So have the books that describe Quicken. This book describes the new Quicken 2007. The author uses the Premier version, but most of what he discusses is applicable to any version, (Premier has more stuff on handling investments). In keeping with the Dummies Books Philosophy, it is written in a light and amusing manner while providing the information needed to get the most out of the software package. Also, as a 'Dummies' book, this book really isn't intended for dummies, but for people with little or no experience with Quicken. As such, some of the fancier features are not treated with the depth you might want if you're already a Quicken user. But if you're just getting started with Quicken you'd have to look a long ways to find a better place to start.

Best for total beginners,

This review is from: Quicken 2007 For Dummies (Paperback)
This book is geared for people that are brand new to Quicken entirely, not just Quicken 2007. If you have EVER used Quicken at any point in your entire life, you will find this book too elementary. I was hoping to learn some hints and tricks that I didn't already know, and perhaps how to take advantage of the improvements that Quicken 2007 offers over Quicken 2005. I didn't find that in this book.
I was particularly disappointed in the way the author almost totally ignores the online capabilities of Quicken and its ability to help you track investments. He basically says you shouldn't be worrying about these things, so he's not going to talk about it. But if you need help with such things as backing up a file and balancing your checkbook, you may find the book helpful.

This book, like almost all of the "Dummies" books is a gret learning tool for someone who is new to Quicken. The tongue-in-cheek humor and easy to read layout gives the absolute beginner the knowledge necessary to be up and running with Quicken in a very short time. I purchased this book for my mother who is over 70 years old and within a couple of days she had set up her accounting process for her at-home business. Another great "Dummies" title !!

This book is easy to navigate and find the problems you're concerned with, but it really doesn't give you any more info than the manual that comes with the software. It's just nice to have it in book form.

I have just taken over as Treasurer for our church. The church is less than 100 members and our Financials have been kept on Quicken 2007 for years. I was in WAY over my head. This book showed me how everything works and what to do when there were things I needed to do. I LOVE IT. Keep the "Dummies" books coming. I also got Windows 7 for Dummies and it has been helping me understand my Windows 7 that was preloaded into my new notebook. I am now at a place with church finances that I can understand and not be intimadated by the program. AND, I only paid $5.48 with the book in EXCELLENT condition!!
Thank you all.

I hate having to read books like this, but. . .sometimes you have to. At least it arrived promptly, and inexpensively. It's especially boring when they talk mostly about windows machines, not mac.

This is exactly what I needed. It is nice not to have to do the trial and error approach to learning a new program. This book explains Quicken beautifully.

Mutual Funds,

This review is from: Quicken 2007 For Dummies (Paperback)
although quicken will do quite a bit at allowing you to evaluate and review your mutual funds from several brokers at one time, mr nelson says you do not need to do this as you can get the info from the brokers directly. the quicken help screens are very frustrating. fiddle with the menus a while and you can get pretty good info on your funds.
