I found it hard to believe that the CD WillMaker Plus 2014 is being sold by Amazon for $36, and at the same time they had a pre-order deal for the WillMaker Plus 2014 book and software kit for only $29.99. The Amazon 'Product Details' of the 'kit' mentions only the book, and nothing about the software as stated in the picture of the cover of the book. I liked the idea of having an actual book to read and mark-up with notations, but I was concerned that the 'kit' might only be the book and not come with any software at all, or only be available as a download (no CD), or worst of all, have to access the software and use it on-line.

After a bit of reflection, it came to me that I could check-out the NOLO website and see if they had a more definitive definition of what was included. To my surprise their website did not offer the 'kit' at all. But they did have a contact phone number, so I called them. I spoke with a pleasant young lady. She said that the 'kit' had not yet been released, but would be in a couple of weeks. To my pleasant surprise she assured me that the kit included the book and a CD of the software. She also said that no matter what form it is sold, the software has the exact same content (the CD in the kit is identical to the stand-alone purchasable CD software).

Bottom-line: I ordered the 'kit' from Amazon. I received it sooner than I thought (got it yesterday). As promised, the 'kit' has both a well written book (with useful table of contents and detailed index) as well as the software CD. A terrific deal, so I'm a happy camper!

I have not had a chance to install the software on my PC. After I've spent some time with it I'll try to remember to write an update to this review.

The software loaded quite smoothly on my Windows 8 system. The program is VERY easy to use. It is set up for multiple users and documents and tracks for each user separately. All of my information was automatically saved as I entered it. The program prompts you to continue where you left off. Explanations were thorough and very clear. The combined book and software were really comprehensive. I completed health and financial documents, powers of attorney, final arrangements document, and a will in 2 days (including letting things set overnight and then editing the next day). Easy, easy, easy! We compared this program and documents to our previously estate-lawyer-prepared worksheets and documents and guess what -- Willmaker Plus was more comprehensive!!! I had all of the documents witnessed and notarized at my local UPS store which offers notary services for a whopping $17, bringing the total cost of preparing and executing my legal documents to under $100 (including the paper and ink it was printed on). Fantastic!!! Absolutely amazing program! Highly recommend!

P.S. I did receive the link for free preparation of the living trust document when I loaded the software to my computer, which I will use at a later date.

I see NO differences in this over my 2009 version. I suppose it is simply just that it contains information of the latest laws but this in NO way affects the Will we made out that is still perfectly legal from 2009. In other words, if you have an earlier version and have already done a will, you have NO need to "upgrade" to this. I guess I was naive to think there would be some benefit for me to do so.

BUT....I am facing several very complex surgeries in the coming weeks and the outcome is less than certain. I figured I had better check and see if my wife is best protected and ordered this. The very comprehensive book you get is a very nice resource and was surprised to see such a THOROUGH book included. I know as much about law as I do space travel. For people like myself who need a simple Will, this is just fine. As others have mentioned, complicated Trust's will cost you extra and you renew EVERY year. The thing that drives me UP THE WALL with ALL things Quicken, is that their products are money machines. In almost all cases you have NO reason to "need" a newer version of any of their products and yet I keep getting sucked in. That of course is MY mistake.

Again, if you need a simple Will for yourself and your spouse, I find this a great resource. IF however, you have an old copy? Never mind....

First, if you're new to the Quicken WillMaker product line, you should be aware that although it's sold (by Nolo) as a stand-alone product, it really works more like an annual subscription product, because it won't get updated beyond 2014. You will not be forced to buy next year's version, and will be able to open and work on and print your existing files from 2014, but will not receive legal updates, which can occur often for some states and especially in these times of constant governmental interferences in private citizens' lives at all levels, unless you buy the 2015 version, which means your existing documents created by this program can contain legal mistakes in the future.

Second, a few years ago Nolo made the anti-consumer decision of detaching the trust documents from the WillMaker product and offering as a "free" online product to buyers of this software. They claim you're getting a high value but in fact it used to be an integral part of WillMaker, plus the online trust maker will expire after one year, unless, again, you renew the subscription. This online component will really expire, as it happened to me. I do not see any reason to believe that this is the same case this time around.

The WillMaker software itself comes with a large number of legal documents for estate planning and also a few everyday tasks. Central to the program, of course, is making a will as well as making a living will (i.e., healthcare directive). WillMaker's interface has, amazingly, not changed (read, not improved) since 10 or 12 years ago when I first started using it. It still goes through a screen-by-screen process which can get very boring and annoying because sometimes you have to figure out how to cross-reference materials in previous or future screens.
