2010 Version No Longer Supported,

This review is from: Quicken WillMaker Premium 2010 [Old Version] (CD-ROM)
I bought this software in 2010 and installed it on my computer in January 2011. I tried to register on-line, but I was instead presented with the following message:
"Product support (including Web Update) for Quicken WillMaker Plus 2010 ended on December 31, 2010. Please note that legal documents created and signed before December 31, 2010 should remain legally valid and enforceable if you have used Web Update regularly. You will need to upgrade your software only if you want to create new documents or update existing documents. For upgrade information, go to Nolo.com." Since I cannot register the product, I cannot get the benefits of registration without paying another $30+ for an upgrade. Nor can I get any 2010 updates that were issued after my CDs were burned -- for all I know, my discs may have been burned a year or more ago. I would think that Quicken would at least make the 2010 updates available for a reasonable period of time into 2011, especially if they allow the 2010 product to be sold into 2011. If you are considering this software, check the year... 2010 apparently means just that (unlike, say, Windows 2000 or Office 2003 -- which have enjoyed years of support). If you buy 2011, be sure to mark your calendar to get any last-minute updates in December.

Great product! Very turbo-taxy, wizard like. Super quick. I was able to do my will, power of attorney, living will in no time at all.
The premium flavor is totally worth the few extra bucks. Sadly, just 1 week before, I purchased the Estates book from Nolo at B&N retail for $40. The e-book came free in this package. Darn!!

Program works good for the initial Will and other documents, does not load current state statues. We took it to a local lawyer he said it was a good start, but not "upholdable" in MN as it was. The bank said the same thing. It did save some money at the lawyer by having the basics done already. I would recomend this to others, but I would also make sure they have it checked by a lawyer.

Lots of options, well organized and complete,

My estate planning (if I can actually use such a grandiose word as "estate" when referring to my worldly possessions) is not complex - no children or other such situations that require more thought and effort. But I do want to ensure that things go smoothly when the inevitable happens, so I thought I'd give this a shot.
I'm familiar with the Nolo books and have always found them clear and helpful. Their software is much the same - it walks you through each step and there is ample information as to the meaning and implications of all the options, both built into the software as well as the accompanying book. Takes a while to grasp everything, but I found it to be highly understandable. Can't say that using this software is enjoyable given that it forces you to think about your mortality, but it is nicely done and served my needs perfectly. Granted, if I had a more complex situation such as having children and wanting to set up trusts for them, I'd probably use this as a starting point to get things organized, and then take it to an attorney to ensure everything is properly set forth.

I don't know how anyone could complain about this package; it's a sensational value for everything that you get. Indeed it would be cheap if all you needed-or-used was the Will-creation program, but it is much more than that.
I bought it solely to make wills for myself and my spouse, which we completed in maybe 15 minutes each. The process was easy to follow and to understand, and the legal help is typically Nolo i.e. straightforward and simple, yet complete. For our (admittedly unsophisticated) wills, this is so much better than using an attorney (which I have done in the past, for 10x the cost). Can't imagine why others complained of "hard to correct mistakes"--I think this is a *strong suit* of the program. You can very easily go-back and change anything you need to, until the final result is perfect. My only (very minor) nitpick would be that while the program knows-and-includes proper legalities for my state, its instruction letter to the Executor was too generalized, and missed a state-specific point. So we won't use WillMaker's letter to our executor but instead modify and personalize it a bit more. To have legal wills completed in literally a matter of minutes is truly remarkable. It took much longer to sign-and-notarize the documents than it did to prepare them! Next we will likely take advantage of the (included) Living Trust creation materials, which of course will mean new wills, but basic wills were so cheap-and-easy we are fully protected for now--very much a relief to have fixed our outdated wills! Thank you thank you Nolo Press/Intuit for making this product!!!

I wasn't expecting the following limitations:
1. Notice states: Software will be updated only until Dec 31 2010. No corrections or changes will be made after that date. 2. Right away you get a pop-up about registration and the availability of "online living trust for $1.00" after you register. I kind of thought that was included in the package but seems you get nicked for another dollar. 3. The package says WillMaker Premium, the disk that come with it and the install product states WillMaker Plus. 4. Must have been manufactured mid-2009 because the box only shows XP/Vista. Nothing about Win7. Installed OK but only used it once.

In my opinion, Intuit and their companies go too far with being sure that there is no attempt to copy or utilize the product. It is not cheap and you are pretty much forced into giving the company information to use the product.
Also, another thing on the same order; you cannot use the product unless you have the CD inserted in the CD drive any time you want to access the product. Pain in the neck. Also not too much difference in this product vs. earlier versions for my usage.

This is a complete and structured will planner. It goes through how to make funeral arrangements, how to complete a will up to your specific states law, and is very simple to use.
The only drawback on this is when printing out the will it seems to put the document on multiple pages. It appears the document could take up a lot less paper if it were formatted different. Each page has a place at the bottom to initial and the last page can be notarized. Well worth the money!

I needed help writing my will and going to lawyers are too expensive so my co-worker suggested this software and it was so easy to use.
The program was easy to install and helps you thought out the whole process and it wasn't hard at all. I even used it for another person and did two people will at the same time. Thanks... |
