Review

'Without a doubt, one of the most authentic folk voices. A stunning,
darkly sensual album. 4 Stars.' --Q Magazine

'...lovely chilled-out gentle folk with dreamy vocals and subtle
guitars. 4 Stars.' --The Sunday Mail

Product Description

One Little Indian is pleased to announce that Kathryn Williams has signed a new deal with the label and will release The Quickening on July 6 in North America. The new record was recorded at Bryn Derwen studio in North Wales. Co-produced with David Wrench, the album introduces samples into Kathryn s acoustic folk and contains some of her sharpest songwriting to date. 'It has a mood,' she says, 'a slightly sinister palette with lyrics that are raw. I see myself in the songs a lot, whereas before I invented characters.'
Often favorably compared to Nick Drake, Joni Mitchell, and Beth Orton, Kathryn Williams has 5 albums and a Mercury Music Prize nomination under her belt. She has toured with Ray LaMontangne, Billy Bragg, David Gray, and Damian Rice among others. She was also featured on the BBC4 documentary, What Leonard Cohen Did For Me. In addition to The Quickening, One Little Indian will be releasing Williams Relations, a collection of cover songs including Leonard Cohen, Nirvana, Tim Hardin, Neil Young, Lee Hazelwood, and more in North America in the fall of 2010.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unobtrusively bewitching., November 24, 2010
By
This review is from: The Quickening (Audio CD)
With The Quickening, Liverpool-born Williams has eight solo albums in eleven years to her credit. Most have been released on her own label; each is a model of fingerpicked acoustics and understated, intimate vocals on adult sentiments; and each is better than the last. Cross Nick Drake, Joni Mitchell, and early Suzanne Vega for an idea of Williams' woodsmoked, autumnal sound. "Just a Feeling", with its cooed, wordless backups, could be a sequel to Drake's "Poor Boy." "Noble Guesses," in its "dreams-are-where-inventions-sleep" chorus, explores Mendeleev in poetry akin to Mitchell's tribute to aviator Earhart in "Amelia." And "Cream of the Crop" evokes the same yearning found in Vega's "Calypso." Still, Williams unfortunately remains a secret to many folkies in the States. Unobtrusively bewitching, The Quickening should find Willams her long overdue recognition.
