Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Brevity may be the soul of wit, but in James Johnstone's Quickies: Short, Short Fiction on Gay Male Desire it's also the essence of an inflamed sexual imagination. Gay male porn--even at its best--has never been noted for its succinctness; the rule has always been "the more details the better." In the 69 pieces here--from noted writers such as Jonathan Strong and Lawrence Schimel to newcomers like Viet Dhin and Sandip Roy--Johnstone has assembled a panoply of the sexy, the odd, the vibrant, and the powerful that covers the full range of gay sexual desire and expression. None of the stories is more than four pages long, and each of them packs a wallop. While they all contain some sexual material--from slow love-making to quick tricking, from arcane fantasy to pulp fiction sex--none of them falls into the category of simple-minded, obvious porn. Johnstone's strength as an editor is being able to choose stories that feature the quirky detail or strike the surprising emotional cord. With its abundance of wit, warmth and wonder, Quickies makes most porn anthologies look overwrought and undersexed. --Michael Bronski

5.0 out of 5 stars From what I've read it's terrific., May 26, 2001

This review is from: Quickies: Short Short Fiction on Gay Male Desire (Paperback)
When I first went searching through my local bookstore's books in the Gay & Lesbian section I was hoping to find some long and good reads. Then this book hit me.

I have been reading quite a lot of homo erotic books lately, even though my mother considers it disgusting and woulds perfer I read normal erotica.

When the book hit me and I read a few of the stories I was blown away. Not only is it well written, it isn't just mindless sex like some books. (Though I never did mind that...)

And it, like a lot of homo erotica, isn't porn. Would you say a normal romance, with half the pages filled with sex, porn? I don't think so. Don't be put of by editorial reviews. They don't know what they're writing about most of the time.

This is a value for money book and if you're interested in this area of fiction I strongly suggest buying it.
