Editorial Reviews

Review

The fourth and most fully realized release from Finnish dark metal band, Throes Of Dawn!

Already being hailed as the band s best effort to date, Quicksilver Clouds finds TOD taking their music to a new and exciting level of depth and atmosphere!

Standout tracks include the haunting single Vertigo, the slow burning Transcendence and the epic Hyperion PLUS a terrifying bonus video!

For fans of brooding, mid-tempo emotional dark metal!

Throes of Dawn is a dark metal band from Finland, formed in 1994 by Henri Koivula (vocals) and Jani Heinola (synth). Three other members soon joined the band after their previous band ceased to exist. Throes of Dawn plays emotional dark metal, combining synths and guitars in a unique way. The music is not fast, nor aggressive, rather mid-paced and heavy, with screaming vocals and occasional clean vocals. The synths play an important role by bringing lots of atmosphere and depth into the music. The lyrical concept of Throes of Dawn deals with the deeper and darker aspects of the human psyche; like solitude, gloomy emotions and despair.
They released two albums on Woodcut Records : "Pakkasherra" (1997) and "Dreams of the Black Earth" (1998)
Where "Pakkasherra" sounds raw and technical "Dreams of the Black Earth" shows much more mature and sensitive side of the band.
After the band s duties with Woodcut were completed, they signed a new contract with Wounded Love Records and shortly after the third album "Binding of the Spirit" was recordedagain at Tico-Tico and released with astonishing responses.
Unfortunately in the summer of 2001 the band was falling apart. The major problem was the big locations distance of the various members, which obstacled the band to run a proper and continuos activity in rehearsing and playing concerts.
The two main members though decided to give it a new chance and started recruiting new spirits... After a while Juha Ylikoski (from Rotten Sound), Harri Huhtala (Cartilage and Vomiturition) and drummer Jani Martikkala (...And Oceans and Enochian Crescent) joined the Throes... and contributed in giving back to this band the well deserved life.
Finally, after years of planning and intensive songwriting, the recordings of the fourth album Quicksilver Clouds started in the autumn of 2003 at Sonic-pump studios in Helsinki. 9 new songs were recorded with a total running time of 47 minutes. With Quicksilver Clouds Throes of Dawn takes their music into totally new and exciting level: The depth and atmosphere in this album greatly exceeds all their previous releases! New elements were fearlessly combined into the traditional Throes of Dawn sound, and this really opens new dimensions into their dark metal. The sound engineer Tero Max Kostermaa showed true dedication to his work, which resulted in brilliant and atmospheric soundscape. Without any doubt, Quicksilver Clouds is the best Throes of Dawn album so far...
Timeline 9
A decade has passed since Throes of Dawn started its journey and the band is now stronger than ever before. The future seems very bright. Countless dawns are yet to be seen, new spheres are yet to be conquered. The composing of the fifth album has already begun... --Cleopatra Records --This text refers to an alternate Audio CD edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Blew me away, May 12, 2005
This review is from: Quicksilver Clouds (Audio CD)
This album was my pleasent surprise of the month. This is some exceptional music. They have a very unique sound, one that I couldn't really compare to anyone. There is both a gruff voice, and clean one. It has complex intrumentation, including great keyboard work.
If you like melodic black metal, this is an amazing cd.
Download the Vertigo video from their website too. Awesome!

I can not believe this cd. It is a Tiamat inspired, thickly orchestrated, keyboard driven piece of melodic deasth metal. GREAT! Best I've heard in years.

Good effort from a Darkened Black/Goth Metal Band.

Nothing too over the top but an interesting release none the less.

This is a nice one to have in the Ipod for Dark & Stormy days while at the office.
