Before I begin my review I should point out that Amazon's preview for Avalanche is incorrect - it is currently playing a remix of Quicksilver. Avalanche is, however, its own song and is not a remix of Quicksilver.Quicksilver was a surprise at first: it comes off as more aggressive and a little angrier than one might usually expect from The Cruxshadows. Also absent is the defining, enchanting violin solo that I've come to associate with some of The Cruxshadows' best: Foreverlast, Return, Sophia, and Birthday (among others). But Quicksilver grew on me with repeated listens: now I think of it as Marilyn, My Bitterness's angsty cousin, but with more inspiring and hope-filled lyrics. However, the star of this single is Avalanche. Avalanche is The Cruxshadows at their best - it's deep, ethereal, and epic, and I can't stop listening to it. It is utterly haunting and stands as proof that despite the addition of new band members and the departure of some old familiar ones, The Cruxshadows have not lost their talent for creating songs that invite you into the darkness before revealing the light hidden within. I'll be first in line for a follow-up album!

Another Excellent Cruxshadows Album,

I picked up a several copies of Quicksilver (one for me, others as gifts for friends) at the start of the CruxShadows North American tour at DragonCon in Atlanta, GA. They held a concert the same weekend featuring a few of the tracks from the single. The single is very good- and easy to re-listen to several times in the car as it gets much better as you go beyond the music and begin deciphering the meanings of the lyrics. The B-sides of the single feature the songs 'Avalance' and 'Roland'- and both songs are hauntingly addictive. There is something about the single releases from the Cruxshadows; I find myself almost immediately loving the B-tracks (such as 'Titan' and 'Adrift' from Sophia, 'The Eighth Square' from Birthday) and it is not until later that the main single seems to 'click'- but that is just a a personal observation. As someone pointed out, the track listings on amazon have tracks #3 and #4 transposed- so if you play the Amazon sample of #3 'Quicksilver (Remix)' you will hear the sample for 'Avalance'. So who is Roland?

Cruxshadows Never Disappoints!,

I think the subject of this message probably says it all. I've been listening to Cruxshadows for years. There's something about the genuine lyrics and honesty in this music, combined with their haunting darkwave/goth sound that just gives me goosebumps. I'm really happy I purchased this CD. They've really outdone themselves with the Quicksilver, Avalanche and Roland tracks. Beautiful.

More of what I expect.,

The Cruxshadows again brings great guitar work, amazing imagery, and a uplifting message with their latest work Quicksilver. The title song has a great beat and fantastic violin and guitar work, Roland, based on La Chanson de Roland, is a slower song and thought-provoking, Avalanche, a good song to bring you through the dark times.Music that a 60 year old grandmother, a 30-something metal head, and a 7 year old girl can all agree on can be hard to find. This transcends generation and genre.

I've been a fan for years, so my review is hardly unbiased, but I wouldn't give a good review if I didn't thoroughly enjoy it. Quicksilver is fantastic, and if you listen closely you can hear references to some of their previous singles and top songs within the lyrics for Quicksilver. The remixes of Quicksilver were very well done and a pleasure to listen to, as is the rest of this EP.Roland is a touching song praising a warrior for his courage and sacrifice in the face of his own imminent demise and urging us not to forget him, to sing a song in his honor. Avalanche wasn't my favorite, (That was Roland, by far), but it's a good song with a strong beat and it would be very easy to dance to for anyone with a sense for music. Overall I would recommend this to any Cruxshadows fans and urge them to buy it (especially in light of the recent loss of their equipment and tour money to theft). Fans of darkwave music, dance music, music with a message and meaning inside of it... You should totally buy this as well. It is well worth the cost.

This single includes five songs. Three versions of Quicksilver and two other new songs. All seem to fit well into the sound CXS have created for themselves. I highly recommend for any dark wave or ebm fan.

Quicksilver is a a very good single as is usual for Rogue and the Cruxshadows. All three versions of the title song are really good, and this may be some of Rogue's best set of lyrics to date. Avalanche is another fine fine song. And Roland, well, that is just a really good ballad. Overall, I think this single/EP is some of Rogue's better writing. The messages here are deep, and the emotion very real.If you are a fan of the Cruxshadows, you need to get this single.

All Tracks WINN,

The song Quicksilver is the focal point of this little album, but the other 2 songs ("Avalanche" and "Roland") are equally worthy. It's not a long album, but it has plenty of replay value and I challenge anyone to listen to these tracks and not be moved. They move me to hop up and down when no one is looking on a regular basis. And each track has a message that sticks. |
