Editorial Reviews

Jesse Winchester, a gifted songwriter and musician, has inspired many iconic artists of our time. When Jesse was diagnosed with esophageal cancer last year, Jimmy Buffett and Elvis Costello immediately agreed it would be a good idea to put together a tribute album as a show of support.

As taken from the album liner notes, written by Bill Flanagan, I don't know anyone who dislikes Jesse Winchester's music. It seems to me that there are only those who love it and those who have never heard it. Jesse is a songwriter's songwriter, praised by every composer from Dylan down and covered by greats from Wilson Pickett to the Everly Brothers. Jesse Winchester's songs are like mirrors in which both performers and listeners can see themselves.

At Christmas of 2011 Buffett wrote to Jesse and told him the album was coming, a gift from a whole bunch of grateful musicians and songwriters to a master. Jesse expressed his gratitude and had some good news of his own. He had beaten the odds after treatment and surgery the doctors had told him he was cancer free. Soon he returned to the road and as of this writing is performing again, making up for a lost year. A happy ending all around.

This album is a tribute to a great singer/songwriter and also to the community of musicians who pulled together to show their love and respect to Jesse when he was down. Now that Jesse is back up, make sure you see him when he comes to your town. They are not making any more like him, says Bill Flanagan.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Timely Tribute!!! November 2, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I've heard Jesse Winchester's songs since the 60's, when he was as equally noted for leaving the U.S. to avoid the draft/war in Vietnam as for his music... I followed him for a good number of years, but his music had slipped my immediate consciousness in the past decade or two...
I was delighted and surprised to find "Quiet About It"! Very pleased to discover that many of the songs were songs of his that I either had not heard or was only vaguely familiar with... and, once again, his songs have permeated my day to day life... Every track on this CD is wonderful, every track is memorable... from James Taylor leading it off, to Elvis Costello's closing tune!
This is a CD for anyone who truly loves songs that are human, warm, funny, poignant and very, very real! All performed with an obvious love for the material and the writer, with production that reveals that love rather than obscuring it behind a sonic wall of electronic manipulation...
If you love good music from singer/songwriters, get this record; you will not be disappointed!

5.0 out of 5 stars Loving Tribute November 2, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
One of the most gifted singer-songwriters in American music, yet one of the most unrecognized, is Jesse Winchester. His songs have been covered by an all-star cast of other artists (Jimmy Buffett, Joan Baez, Wilson Pickett, Elvis Costello, Emmylou Harris, Ian Matthews, Nicolette Larsen, the Everly Brothers, and many more), and Winchester has recorded many acclaimed albums of his own, all of them worth hearing. As noted in the main review, this album came together as both a tribute and a benefit project to help pay for Winchester's medical care. The result is this excellent 11-song collection of tunes from as stunning a collection of living legends as it gets. If seeing these names doesn't get you excited, no need to read any further. And yet, due to the turbulent changes in the music industry, an album with names like this has barely made a ripple. The fact that it's on a small label probably hasn't helped matters either. Well folks, we need to drum up support for this one, because it's worthy on so many levels. If you've heard the music of Jesse Winchester in the past, it should come as no surprise that his songs positively shine in the hands of these gifted performers, all of whom are devoted fans of Winchester.
In Bill Flanagan's liner notes for the album he writes: "Elvis Costello points out that it is quite remarkable how every song on this collection fits the style of each singer so well that you could swear he or she wrote it." That's definitely the case. These artists take Winchester's songs and put a distinctive personal stamp on each one of them. Listen to Rosanne Cash easing into "Biloxi", Lyle Lovett putting just the right touch on "Brand New Tennessee Waltz", or Lucinda Williams putting everything she has into "Mississippi You're On My Mind." Brilliant, emotionally powerful music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't hesitate November 19, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
If you are a serious Jesse Winchester fan do not hesitate to get this album. Often tribute recordings end up with mixed results and some misfires. NOT so here. Every track is is performed well and they flow together wonderfully. The author of the one star review has a right to express his opinion, but I need to counter it. I love Jesse Winchester and I believe his legacy is honored here. Trust me-----this is really good.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Quiet Five Stars March 17, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
No serious argument with the the four-star reviewers here. I simply thought the CD was a little better than they did. The one-star reviewer is obviously clueless.

Three of my four favorite Jesse Winchester songs were missing -- Eulalie, Yankee Lady, and Bless Your Foolish Heart. But tribute albums almost always omit some songs you like, and Jesse seems to be incapable of writing anything mediocre. Also, the performers on this CD capture Jesse's spirit, if not his voice. I'm giving it five stars anyway, but just barely.

4.0 out of 5 stars A must if you have all of Jesse Winchester's CDs November 6, 2013
By Michael

It's great to hear Jesse Winchester songs performed by others. In particular, Costello's "Quiet About It" and Lucinda Williams "Mississippi You're on my Mind" bring out meanings that I've never heard in Jesse's versions. I also loved Rosanne Cash's version of "Biloxi". But this is really an album for Jesse Winchester fans. If you're not (yet) one of us, you'd do better buying one of Jesse's albums.

With the web and it's all powerful and knowing sweep, I am shocked that I wasn't aware of this CD. Featuring Elvis Costello, Rosanne Cash, Allen Toussaint and the list of amazing artists goes on and on: I don't understand how this wonderful CD has flown under the radar. But it has and I am so happy I found it. Sample a few tracks on YouTube and I am almost sure you will agree this is one of the Best Collections of 2012. Warning! Jesse writes some of the most beautiful, heartbreakingly sad songs ever written, so be prepared to lubricate the old tear ducts.
