A rollicking counting guide,
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews

It should be a quiet country night: but not with the sounds made by two owls, three geese, and numerous noisy night animals. A rollicking counting guide is masked within this fun story of a quiet night attacked by the wild.

I love this book. It's great for counting and for added fun I make all the animal noises as more and more animals join in the noise. I started reading this to my daughter at 1 1/2 and she liked it.

My daughter was obsessed with this book when she was about three years old. It caught her eye in the library and we kept renewing it until we no longer could and had to buy our own copy. She would recite the book, cover to cover, and we'd make the sound effects of each of the creatures on the pages as we read along. She still enjoys hearing the book every now and then (she's now eight). Now my two-year-old son is enthralled by this book!
The simple but catchy rhyming verse uses a counting pattern and familiar creatures to tell a cute story of a supposedly "quiet night". The opening phrase "the moon is big, the moon is bright" is a great beginning to this adorable story (with fun illustrations by John Manders).

The drawings are big and bold, but not particularly pretty. It's full of nonsensical words like "rowl-yowl" and "bar-rum". It reads like "The 12 Days of Christmas." But for some reason my two year old loves to have this story read to him. So if a child loves the book, it is good, right?
