5.0 out of 5 stars A "Can't Put It Down" Thriller October 28, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
As a long time avid follower of mysteries both in books and on TV (I own a complete DVD collection of every episode of the Inspector Morse TV series ever produced, for example) I am pleased to report that Quiet Ops, written by L. J. Martin and Bob Burton, is an exciting and entertaining read. The hero and owner of Quiet Ops, Mr. Brad "Bulldog" Bennedict, is a former Marine commando and Iraq veteran who is in the business of solving delicate problems for rich people. The clientele needs to be rich people because Bulldog's fees are high, and rich people often have intricate problems, the solution of which puts Bennedict and his associates in dangerous, sometimes life-threatening situations.

Bulldog reminds me of Travis McGee, the hero in a series of mystery books I used to read years ago by the author John D MacDonald. Both were tough and fearless but they both had a strong moral code in terms of right and wrong as well as a soft side down deep. Bulldog is flashier than Travis McGee and he uses all the latest technologies and equipment to give him an advantage in his numerous risky endeavors. He has a number of friends and associates he hires for his various jobs, including a 350 pound Samoan called Cocoa and another former Marine and Iraq veteran nicknamed T-Rex, and they are all just as fearless, resourceful and tough as he is. Bulldog lives near Santa Barbara, California, but he has an office associate in Florida named Monique St. Marmont, who is an exceptionally attractive woman, but who fits in with the tough guys with no problem. These and other characters in the novel are particularly compelling people.

The adventures undertaken by this group were exciting, and I found myself not wanting to stop reading in order to see what happened next. This is one of the most entertaining novels I have read in some time. I won't go into any story details in order to preserve the surprise and suspense, but there are plenty of both.

When your business is fixing other people's problems, it tends to create difficulties in your own life. Brad "Bulldog" Benedict is the best in the correction of these problems but he may be in too deep with the latest case. Brad calls in all his best cohorts and even a few former enemies to help with rescuing two women caught up in something they cannot seem to escape. Brad has the ability to tweet the system to make the outcome turn his way yet this case is dogging him because nothing is falling into place as planned.

Having great friends makes the case happen but the enemies seem to want to set the night on fire with revenge. Brad is trying to figure out who is working with him as much as against him. The thought that it might be the man who hired him is frightening even to a former Marine.

This is one wild and fantastic read you should be prepared to take on and be mesmerized by from cover-to-cover. Every character is well written with realistic dialogue, the storyline compliments every page with fascinating interaction between every person in the book. The plot is fast paced and this read is complete package of delight.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Action Packed Parallel Universe October 19, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Quiet Ops is an exciting, can't put it down novel. Bob Burton's attention to detail about Santa Barbara and Palm Beach brings the reader onto the scene and into the local haunts of both towns. His characters bring you into a world that is a parallel universe to the normal everyday existence that most people live.

The fast pace, quick turns and surprising outcomes are a hallmark of Mr. Burton's writing style and stories. In a nutshell his books take you away.

If Quiet Ops existed and I had a problem outside or inside the law, I would not hesitate to hire him and his group.

Quiet Ops is a LOUD SUCCESS!!!

2.0 out of 5 stars Exciting read terrible editing November 16, 2013
By dierpap
Format:Kindle Edition
The book is interesting, mostly well thought out fiction, that needs a little work with facts, cosistency, and some serious editing. E.G., in one place, the main character owns a modified Blazer. In other areas of the book, the same vehicle is referred to a Bronco. Which is it? There have been no five star generals in the US military since WW2, Gen. Harold Arnold being the only five star in the Air Force (who originally was in the Army before the Air Force was formed in 1948). The book has incorrect, extra and unnecessary, and missing words or strange spellings that requires a some thought and a few re-reads. The publisher should either hire editors if they do not have any or hire attentive ones. The editing needs serious work.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not a "quiet" book despite the title April 15, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Some roughhousing going on between those pages! Clueless rich girls, greedy dad, gangsta caricatures, and the efficient Quiet Ops team doing what needs to be done. I was entertained. Nothing really over-the-top, but it all worked out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quiet Ops another winner for L.J. January 12, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
What a great read, once I started I couldn't put it down and read it from cover to cover. Well written, full of excitement, drama, and good old fashioned suspense that draws you in so that you are waiting for what happens next. Truly enjoyable. I know the work of L.J. Martin and was curious to how the team up with a prtner would be but I wasn't dissappointed. Hope there are more great books like these to come. Get yours now.
