4.0 out of 5 stars The sun will always be despised by the ungrateful moon (4.5), September 20, 2006

This review is from: The Quiet Room (Audio CD)
Amazing Device is essentially Tribunal Records' answer to bands like Incubus and Breaking Benjamin. They have radio appeal like the afforementioned bands but are a bit too heavy to be a radio band. The heaviness works in their favor though, offsetting the great clean vocals. Other than that this is a rather straight forward rock band. Short guitar solos stick with the straight forward approach but add to the asthetic nonetheless.

The cover sticker says that Amazing Device is recommended for fans of Incubus, Glassjaw, Faith No More, and Deftones. I have two more bands to add to those recommendations, Hoobastank and Finger Eleven. If you were to collect those bands' heaviest stuff you'd get the general idea of AD's general sound. The Quiet Room won't blow many people away. Sure most of it is pretty original and definitely catchy but Aaron's voice, while good, grates the nerves after a few listens. The rest of the band is as solid as steel though. The riffs crash like thunder, you can hear the bass and it is quite good, and the drums aren't the typical double bass so that pleases as well.

The songs are great. Each of the 9 songs fails to disappoint. Secret features guest vocals from Lost Prophets' Ian Watkins and could end up being the album's true highlight. My Saving Grace has a great and memorable chorus. Amazing Device is another radio ready song with quite possibly Aaron's best vocal performance of the CD. Calamine is the one song I have mixed emotions about. The verses are great with a guitar part that kind of matches Aaron's voice which is entertaining to hear. But the thing I'm not sure about is the lyrics. "Scratch too much and it will spread, this rash is not the end". Does that maybe double as relationship issues? If not that's just a flat out weird thing to sing about. Genius maybe, but weird. Speak Up is your basic 'speak your mind' type of song. However, the insanely catchy beat in the chorus and bridge more than make this song memorable. Discreet offers up some Incubus/Hoobastank-esque vocals. Other than that it's just Amazing Device being Amazing Device. Loss And Recovery is the best song featured. Aaron's vocals are excellent with almost whisper/sing/scream vocals. The track also benefits from a great riff throughout. Lay Your Head is another brooding/all out type of song. Again, there's another great riff through the verses. The final track, Air, ends the CD properly enough. It's kind of slow yet not. Lyrics are pretty good.

My favorite songs are Secret, My Saving Grace, Speak Up, Loss And Recovery, and Lay Your Head. Amazing Device won't be a band to sleep on. They have an original sound and what seem to be great musicians so that can only mean good things. They may not ever gain the true recognition they deserve but I'm sure they'll develop quite a following. Here's hoping they keep making good music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing!, July 15, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The Quiet Room (Audio CD)
Powerful, beautiful, electrifying, heavy, smooth; these are some of the words that have been used to describe the music of this NYC rock band. Their thickly layered blend of music also enlists vivid thought provoking lyrics and a pop sensibility that feature's enough passion to give a spiked edge to the fragility of the human psyche and draw the line between being torn and being torn apart. If you like Glassjaw,Incubus,Faith No More, Deftones, Lost Prophets etc..You will love Amazing Device.
