5.0 out of 5 stars A True Singer-Songwriter Album, September 3, 2002

This is one those albums that reaffirms your belief in music. Every song is stunning, a true shot of reality in a glitter-filled mainstream. This music is quiet, pensive, beautiful, and ultimately, REAL. A perfect album for a quiet, dark, and rainy afternoon. My personal favorite track is "Quiet and Still", it has such an ethereal chorus and melody, and the way his lyrics weave with his voice: heart-breaking. A must have.

4.0 out of 5 stars The day of the songwriter is back..., July 30, 2002

What a great album to play while you light all the candles in your living room and daydream. Even Johansen has the craftmanship similar to the Travis/Coldplay wave but still stands out on his own. Slightly sleepier with pretty harmonies and a more acoustic feel. This is the type of CD to play and put the remote down. The mood is nicely held throughout the whole album without it becoming too moody.

"Where Happiness Lives" starts out with a Nick Drake sounding intro and continues into a beautiful harmony-rich chorus.

"Bullet to Your Heart" is carfully arranged strings over a (what else) Beatlesque heart-wrencher of a hook.

"Beautiful Day" is listener-friendly while at the same time well written that reminds me of a Bacherach (sp?)/ Amee Mann style.

"Dancing in the Moonlight" is one of those covers that has just enough of the song we know and love (and have heard enough times in our lives) but is reincarnated with new life.

All of his songs are 3-4 minutes in length and all crafted with the delecacy of a pro. A nice little secret to keep on hand when its time to wind down or chill out on the porch on a Sunday.

5.0 out of 5 stars Never take it out of your stereo, September 25, 2002

Now that I've had this album for more than a year and still listening to it constantly, I can't imagine how it has still gone relatively unnoticed. Every song is beautiful with nothing sounding extremely sad or happy (although the songs lean more towards the depressing side) and it's perfect for a long car ride, or, why not, a short car ride, or maybe before you go to sleep. The songs are not that long and are quite simple, but the simplicity is beautiful. Even's voice is like nothing I've ever heard before. The way he sings and plays his music put you in the middle and give you a sense of warmth.

Really hard for me to use the term *beautiful* as a guy but this album is perfect for you and your mate to spend some quality simple time listening to. It's probably the ONLY album I've listened to where ALL the songs are quality. Just phenomenal. Would love to see him come back into the states for some appearances...Europe is beyond my reach for right now..

5.0 out of 5 stars Get your hands on anything Even Johansen creates, April 3, 2006
This review is from: Quiet & Still (Audio CD)
This guy is a musical genius. His infectious sound will harbor a place in your heart and mind, without question. My best advise is to get this album, and his other Magnet releases, and then call your work and ask for a couple of weeks off...because you will busy doing nothing else but listening to his albums. This guy is truly one of the greatest Pop musicians in decades. How this is going relatively under the radar is crazy! Get this album no matter the cost...you won't regret you did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Unknown Out There, January 3, 2003
This review is from: Quiet & Still (Audio CD)
I've been following this chap since his days fronting "Libido" (check out their album "Killing Some Dead Time" on Fire Records) who were the best post-Britpop band out there (even though their Norwegian) ....... this album is a cut above .... awesome ... mellow, melodic, intelligent and dry.

Even has a unique and pleasant voice. I think that his work will only get better. Each track gets a little better after each listen.
