Book Description

March 2005 Sounds True Audio Learning Course
Mention the name Crazy Horse, and many of us will remember a history lesson about a faceless Indian warrior who defeated General George Custer at the Battle of the Little Big Horn. But beyond this singular event, who was this man? And what teaching did he offer to all peoples of every nation? On Quiet Thunder, Lakota lineage holder Joseph M. Marshall III presents the first audio-learning program based entirely on the rich oral tradition of his people to share a vibrant portrait "painted with the brush of reality rather than the distortion of legend." With him, you will meet a compassionate but purposeful man driven by the empowering vision of a "Thunder Dreamer"- one who "walked the path of giving as opposed to gaining," honor instead of ego, and leadership through leading, not authority. Let the past come alive with Quiet Thunder as Joseph M. Marshall III uncovers the life and teachings of Crazy Horse-warrior, visionary, and beloved leader of the Lakota nation.

From AudioFile

Joseph Marshall III tells the story of Crazy Horse, not once, but several times in this performance, weaving the story of the great leader into the larger story of the Lakota people and the crisis they encountered when facing Euro-Americans. The first half of the performance is straightforward narrative; the second half teaches lessons about how to live a meaningful life. These lessons are illustrated with key points from Crazy Horse's life and stories from Lakota mythology. Through it all, Marshall maintains the evocative cadence of a traditional storyteller. He takes his time, underscoring each point, not just with voice but with breath and silence. His powerful delivery is supported by occasional selections of songs performed by the Crazy Horse Singers. What more can one say about the esteemed elder, Joseph Marshall, III. Being a college history instructor, I have been quite impressed with Mr. Marshall's knowledge and insight to Lakota history and culture. I use his works in my classes quite frequently. All of his works are superb.

3.0 out of 5 stars Crazy Horse Story, June 7, 2007
This review is from: Quiet Thunder: The Wisdom of Crazy Horse (Sounds True Audio Learning Course) (Audio CD)
The story was interesting but it was repeated over and over throughout the 6 CDs. It could have been done in about 2. It might have been less expensive that way too then.
