Book Description

June 14, 2004
Stopping the constant "chatter" of the mind — is it possible in today's world? People have so much to juggle, schedule, discuss, and think about, how can they slow it all down? Won't they miss out? In fact, John Selby points out that our nation's thinkaholic ways result in such detrimental effects as high stress, insomnia, anxiety attacks, and negative, self-critical attitudes.

In Quiet Your Mind, he offers an easy-to-follow mind-management process to help people let go of stressful mental habits and enter a more heart-centered, intuitive, and peaceful engagement with everyday life. Based on solid scientific research yet presented in a very approachable tone, the techniques here allow people to quiet over-busy thoughts and prevent fear-based emotions so that they can be truly refreshed, spontaneous, and engaged with each new moment.

EXCERPT FROM INTRODUCTION:

For hundreds of years now, Western civilization has become more and more engulfed in the thinking mind’s grand assumption that its own mental chatter and nonstop flow of judgments and worries is the most important happening on planet Earth. Ever since Descartes made his intellectual’s assertion Cogito, ergo sum – "I think, therefore I am" – the talkative function generating our stream-of-consciousness commentary on everything happening around us has gained free reign to dominate almost every moment of our lives.

I would like to quietly yet forcefully challenge this ego assumption that we function best, and enjoy life to the fullest, when we’re habitually engaged in nonstop mental reflections, worries, plottings, and judgments. In exact contrast, this book will demonstrate that only through regularly quieting the entire flow of thoughts, images, memories, and reflections that fill our minds can we regain intimate and fulfilling contact with sensory, intuitive, and heart-felt experiences that emerge when we shift into direct encounter with the world around us.

More About the Author

I'm of cattle ranching origins in California and Arizona, one of the few remaining people who actually did the work of a cowboy while growing up - not so glamorous actually. I was eager to head back east to Princeton - and from then on it was non-stop change ... government-funded psychedelic research in the late sixties ... meditation exploration and working as a therapist in the seventies ... loads of trips south into Indian realms where I felt most at home. Then Europe in the eighties where I found people seriously eager to plunge into the deeper mind-management methods I'd been developing.

After a number of fulfilling and enlightening but not-quite-right relationships, finally the love of my life appeared at 37 ... and then off we went to Hawaii to start a family (most fulfilling of all) and go deeper into my own explorations. Now our boys are grown and living in California, and after almost 20 years here in paradise, Birgitta and I are getting set to also move to California so as to be more plugged in doing seminars etc, with three new books coming out this new year.

During the last decade I've been finalizing my life work in developing short-form meditation' techniques and Focus Phrase methods for quickly quieting the mind and shifting into present-moment full engagement. Quite a number of books have emerged along the way - and now Birgitta and I are producing special 'experiential video' programs that in and of themselves, awaken a meditative present-moment quality of consciousness. This review is from: Quiet Your Mind: An Easy-to-Use Guide to Ending Chronic Worry and Negative Thoughts and Living a Calmer Life (Paperback)
Quiet Your Mind by psychologist, writer, producer, therapist and educator John Selbly is a thoroughly "reader friendly" guide to dealing successfully with chronic worry, emotional adjutation, and live a calmer, happier, day-by-day life. Guidelines for meditation and tranquility help teach the reader how to be alone without succumbing to loneliness, learning not to be dominated by judgmental thoughts, achieving greater passion with one's intimate partner by not getting lost in distracting fears and obsessions, and much more. A positive, uplifting mental and emotional self-help guide.
