Quietly...Beautifully...Brutally.,

Albums like these serve two purposes. One: they show how ahead of the curve Neurosis truly is. Two: A band can never go wrong putting out epics like these.
MotA has clearly improved in both writing and production. The album sounds superb. "Ties That Blind" was monumental in execution and scope. It's easily one of my favorite records of ANY genre. This album is not like that at all. It seems more refined and, dare I say, even restrained. From the album art, to the font (notice all the lower case cursive) there's definitely a theme to be found. I throw in the Neurosis comparison because few of their "disciples" ever attain the focus, precision, vision or execution that they are capable of. ISIS and Cult of Luna are there. I feel with this album MotA have stepped up to that level. Above anything else, this band is excellent at dynamics and tugging the heartstrings, both brutally and beautifully. I could see how this album may take a listen or two to fully absorb...but it will be worth every minute you spend with it.

This album is probably their best album if you've not listened to them at all. After getting this album with songs like Quietly and Hate and Heartache I also bought The Ties that Bind. Both are great albums, but I think this album is a more fair shot to the listener.
After just finding others who like them they say the earlier albums seemed to define them so much and that Quietly had them a little more spread out with their tracks. It's hard to describe unless you own both, but Ties that Bind is a little more direct while Quietly is paced better. In my opinion if you want to try listening to a band and giving them a fair shot you should listen to an album that seems like they're brainstorming and presenting a real compilation of work rather than a continuation of a single thought process. The Ties that Bind was not that album, Quietly is. Both are still great. Quietly's vocals come through perfectly and it's paced perfectly as well.

It's an incredible CD, only for people who likes to go further... Pure Sludge, deep and full of strength and power.
