First time on CD for this 1970 classic. The biggest claim to fame for the band Quill was their appearance at the legendary Woodstock festival. They released only one album on Cotillion Records, a mixture of late '60s Psychedelia and the Boston sound from that era. It has been a coveted collector's item for decades and is almost impossible to find. Wounded Bird. 2010. --This text refers to an alternate Audio CD edition.

This album features some very nice, calming songs, like "Yellow Butterfly", but also can be very aggressive, with songs like "They Live the Life" and "Shrieking Finally". The album starts of with the fast paced and enjoyable song "Thumbnail Screwdriver", then fades into the vocal harmonies and beautiful melodies of "Tube Exuding". Unlike the first song, this one ends abruptly and is immediately proceeded by "They Live The Life", a very deep and powerful song about those that live "The Life", referring to wealth, power and luxury. This song is very slow in the beginning, but around 4 and a half minutes in, the percussion solo begins, and the song gets progressively faster and louder, and about 8 and one fourth minutes into the song, it goes back to melodic music. This song is my personal favorite off of this album, but not my favorite that was written by the band. That would have to be "That's How I Eat" from the Woodstock setlist. Also, I must point out, in "They Live The Life", the lead singer holds a note for an impressive 40 seconds. The next song is called "BBY", and before you ask, NO I DO NOT KNOW WHAT THAT STANDS FOR. This song is somewhat jazzy, supported by a Trombone, a few Trumpets, and I think there's a Saxophone somewhere in there. There's not really much to say about this song, as it's not the most impressive song on the album. "Yellow Butterfly" is a guitar/vocal solo, with no other instruments, a what I think is a Wah pedal of some kind, and is very slow, and runs the vocals through a Leslie Rotator Amp. "Too Late" is the kind of song that makes you want to get up and start moving. The chorus includes the phrase: "I'm standing on the outside looking in, thinking how it could be." which is sort of cliche, but it works very well in this song. It's very upbeat, and includes a guitar, a very good drum and bass line and an excellent piano part, along with superb lyrics and melodies/harmonies. So, now, on to the final song, "Shrieking Finally". This is the most interesting song on the album, as for the first few seconds, it is very depressing, but then goes to an upbeat style, and then proceeds to change to a rock opera-esque song at about 3 and a half minutes through. It then goes back to being upbeat, then to depressing again.
This is a vast improvement from the previous 1970 release.
Even if this hasn't been remastered (I'm fairly certain it hasn't) it sounds crystal clear on CD, with all instruments easily heard, unlike in the version uploaded to a certain file sharing site in 2007.

I was in my local record store and i picked this record up out of curiosity. I was blown away by the excellent vocals on this album. It's like Deep Purple reborn. Vocals and guitars are top notch. It's refreshing to see a band like The Quill use an organ. Highly Recommended. Also pick up Solace-Further also on Meteorcity

there's some good psychedelic songs on here and some good rock and maybe one strange song,but it's agood cd to have in your collection ,if you like music from the late '60's -early '70's era!
