5.0 out of 5 stars A stunning insight into Quilt National 2011 June 29, 2011
Format:Hardcover
This beautiful hardback book presents, in striking color photography and detailed-yet-concise descriptions by the artists themselves, the 86 works of fiber art that were accepted for the 2011 exhibition at The Dairy Barn Arts Center in Athens, Ohio.

Quilt National is possibly the most prestigious juried art-quilt exhibit in the U.S., and has been called "the premier international showcase for contemporary quilts" by The Wall Street Journal. As a fiber artist myself, I know that it takes tremendous talent, imagination, and determination to ultimately have a piece accepted by Quilt National. Many fine artists try for years and years before finally (if ever) having work shown there.

Some previous editions of the Quilt National book have not had, in my opinion, the excellent quality of photography that this 2011 edition displays. Each image is large, clear, and, as far as I can tell, color-correct. Many of the pages also have detail shots, so that the reader can see a closer view of the piecing, painting, stitching and other minutia of these works of art. It is especially exciting to be able to see the fine quilted details. The artists' statements are all well-written and interesting, adding yet another layer of personal enjoyment to the images.

I received this book in consideration for writing an independent review, but having now reviewed it, I can honestly say that I would have bought it anyway. Definitely a keeper for your library.

A catalog of the 86 art quilts selected for inclusion in Quilt National 2011 this book is an absolute feast for the eyes no matter what your preferred artistic medium is. In the opening introduction, Kathleen Dawson (Quilt National Director) writes about the much speculated and mysterious jurying process that quilts are subjected to determine their inclusion into each exhibition. Any artist considering submitting to a future exhibition would be wise to spend time reading this section as it gives a comprehensive look inside the process.

Dawson's introduction is followed by statements from each of the jurors; Eleanor McCain, Nelda Warkentin, and Pauline Verbeek-Cowart. Warkentin talks about her experience jurying the exhibition and gives some thoughtful and insightful comments on some of the award winning quilts. McCain opens her statement with the question "What about these works of art demands that they be formed from cloth and Thread? Is there a message and meaning that can only be revealed through this medium?" and then goes on to discuss the ideas and concepts that great art quilts explore. Verbeek-Cowart's discusses her role as a juror and includes some very valuable advice in her closing to those whose work did not get selected for the exhibition. Invaluable advice for any fiber artist considering submitting their work to any juried show.

The rest of the book is dedicated to full page photographs of the art quilts that sometime include a detail image as well. Each quilt lists the artist name, award, artwork name, dimensions, materials and techniques used along with a brief statement from the artist about the piece. Photographs are clear, vivid and allow the details to show through.

This is a beautifully done book and highly recommended for both art quilt collectors and enthusiasts.

Very lovely presentation of this National art quilt exhibition - should now be called Quilt "International" due to so many artists from other countries now included in the exhibit. This group has grown from just a handful of artists working in fiber (quilt type) to many hundred. It is good to see such a nice catalog of this important exhibition. Good Job!!!
